Statement

of Support Mr. Charlie Appleby Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Advanced Disposal 7915 Baymeadows Way #300 Jacksonville, Florida 32256 Dear Mr. Appleby: We, the undersigned, add our voices to those of Evanston residents and Evanston Neighbors United, asking that Advanced Disposal relocate their solid waste facility situated at 1711 Church Street in Evanston, Illinois (previously owned by Veolia ES Solid Waste) to a more appropriate location. The Illinois Environmental Protection Agency first granted a permit for this location to operate as a waste transfer facility in 1984. Because it operated prior to existing environmental regulations of the time, it was grandfathered in and is exempt from adhering to many current environmental regulations. According to current Illinois law (415 ILCS 5/22.14) waste transfer facilities must be located at least 1,000 feet from the nearest residential dwelling. The picture on the next page illustrates a diameter of 1,000 feet around the Advanced Disposal waste transfer facility located at 1711 Church Street. There are at least 250 residential dwellings housing thousands of residents within that circle. If Advanced Disposal applied for a permit today they would not be allowed to operate at this location. The Advanced Disposal waste transfer facility is located 40 feet from a large childrens park used by 68,000 residents a year. It is 600 feet from a high school serving thousands of youth and less than 10 feet from the nearest residential dwelling. This facility services over 90 garbage trucks a day using a narrow, two-lane thoroughfare to enter and exit the facility. They process over 400 tons of garbage a day. The heavy industrial traffic and potential air toxins pose a safety concern for our community. As communities grow and change, so must their businesses. When there are other properly located waste transfer facilities within a short distance of this operation, it is immoral and unjust for Advanced Disposal to continue to operate this facility. Advanced Disposal is the largest privately-owned environmental services company in the United States and has the resources to relocate this facility to a site which mitigates the negative impact on its host community. As a company that touts its commitment to operating in an environmentally sustainable manner and modeling industry best practices, we call on Advanced Disposal to relocate this facility to a site that allows the company to operate within current Illinois environmental laws and accepted best practices.
