Description of Lesson: The teacher will begin the lesson by gathering the children at assigned carpet seats. The teacher will use a flip chart to challenge the children on five contractions to see if the children are able to understand the concept of two words being joined as one. The students will then be directed to the SMARTboard to join a list of contractions. The students will each have a contraction to do on the SMARTboard. This will give the children plenty of practice. After the joining all contractions on the SMARTboard, the students will be asked to quietly and by table to return to their seats where they will complete a work sheet, Castle Contractions. Curriculum Standards Addressed: SC State Standard: 1-3 The student will learn to read by applying appropriate skills and strategies. Indicator: 1-3.6 Use structural analysis to determine the meaning of compound words and contractions. EEDA Standard: 4 Students will demonstrate a positive attitude toward work and the ability to work together. South Carolina SSCA: Section 59-63-130. (A) A person may not engage in: (1) harassment, intimidation, or bulling; Cross Curricular Connections: The students have each word they will be joining in contraction on the common word wall. The students have learned all of the words on the common word wall. Instructional Objective(s) Criteria: The students will determine the compound of two words to form a contraction. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Pre-Assessment: The student will be challenged during the beginning of the activity using the flipchart of contractions.

During Assessment: The students will join two words on the SMARTboard to form a contraction. Post Assessment: The students will complete a worksheet, Castle Contractions (attached). The students will be evaluated using a rubric (attached). The teacher will call students by table to seat at the carpet. 2. The teacher will ask the students what they believe are contractions. 3. The teacher will then show the students the Contraction Flip Chart. a. The teacher will go through the flip chart and discuss how the two words are formed together to complete the contractions. 4. The teacher will then pull up a blank page on the SMARTboard. 5. I am he is h. it is that is i. they have he has j. she has you are 6. The teacher will model joining the first two words into a contraction

7. Each student will be called to the board to join a set of words into a contraction 8. After the students have formed contractions, each table will be called to return to their desk. 9. The teacher will pass out Castle Contractions sheets. a. She will give directions out and also read aloud each set of words on the board. 10. The students will turn in their Castle Contractions sheets to the teachers desk and prepare for PE. Accommodation(s): For students who are having difficulty combining two words to form contractions will be assisted by a peer or the teacher. For early finishers, the students may return to morning work or read a book from their basket. If a child has not finished before P.E. they may complete work when returning.
