MATERIAL BALANCE: REACTOR

Basis: 100 kmoles of methanol in fresh feed per hour Since the production rate is (formaldehyde) =1 ton/hr =1000kg =33.3kmol/hr Molecular weight(MW) =30 kg/mol From the above reaction For the production of 1mole of formaldehyde(CH2O) required 1mole of methanol(CH3OH). Therefore CH2O =33.3kmol/hr. CH3OH =33.3kmol/hr =1066.67 kg/hr =1.07 tons/hr Assumed the conversion is 90% Moles of reactant reacted Conversion = Moles of reactant fed

So amount of methanol should be added =1.19 TPH =1185.9 kg/hr =37.04 kmol/hr Remaining this amount 10%will recycle to the system = 3.7 kmol/hr =0.12 TPH Actual O2 required Based on the above reaction O2 should be added = 18.52 kmol /hr Actual O2 supplied (20%) excess = 22.22 kmol/hr = 0.71 TPH Excess = 22.22 -18.52 =3.7 kmol /hr Air mixture components O2 =23.2 % by weight and N2 =75.47 % Therefore amount of nitrogen present in air = 2.31 TPH = 2313.26 kg /hr (MW of N2 = 28) = 82.62 kmol /hr

recycled methanol = 118.4 kg /hr H2O = 600 kg/hr CH2O = 1000kg /hr Methanol = 1185.9 kg/hr
