Standard Measurement

Rationale: The students will be able

to measure concrete models in inches using rulers and other measuring devices.

Submitted by: Jenny, Shayla, Veronica, Denise, Caroline, Sarah, & Andrea. for Grade Level _2nd__ Objectives: TSW be able to recall estimation from a previous lecture TSW be able to measure concrete objects in inches using different tools for measurement. Lesson Plan: Introduction (Anticipatory Set/Motivation): 1. Sid the Science Kid clip from PBS DVD. (3:25 min) 2. Review previous TEKS on estimation (Veronica) -1(E): determine a solution to a problem involving length, including estimating lengths; -Lets review -Last time we learned to estimate the length of objects with nonstandard measurement such paper clips, our arms and we also used are pencils. -We also learned to record data in our math journals based on the results we got from estimating the length of objects. -.to expand our knowledge on measurement today, we will measure using standard units measuring in inches. 3. Introduction: Book, Inch by Inch by Leo Lionni (Shayla) - Seek prior knowledge during this time. -Use a word web as a visual: things that standard measurement can be used for. -Ask the students to make text-to-text, text-to-self, and text-toworld connections. Process: 1. Teacher-lead whole group lesson: Teacher measures things in front of the class. (Andrea) - Explain how to use a ruler. -Self made PowerPoint as visual aid. 2. Teacher-student lesson: Each table will measure their feet on a sheet of butcher paper. They will then compare the lengths of their feet using ruler. (Denise) -The students will be able to see the purpose of using rules as standard measuring tools instead of feet (non standard). -Teacher will explain why it is important for students to need to know how to use standard measurement.

Materials/Equipment: Treasure

3. Independent Activity: Measure Hunt (Jenny) - Each table will be a pirate ship. - Students will be allowed to choose the different roles on the ship. (Captain, Measurer, Illustrator, and Scribe) - Each ship will be given a set of directions - Each ship will be given a certain measurement (6in, 10in, 12, etc.) They will then move around the room and find objects that are the length they are looking for. - After about 10 minutes, students will return to their ship and draw their different objects on a butcher paper treasure chest. Each ship will present to the class. 4. Extension Activity: Students will measure their height on a sheet of butcher paper. They will get see all the different heights. Students will write down their height in inches. (Caroline) 5. Closing (Sarah) -Restate objectives -Check for understanding -Why is it important to know how to use standard measurement? -How can it be used in everyday situations? Accommodations: 1. Instructions will be given verbally and written. 2. Pictures can be included for ELL students. Partners can also be included for students who need assistance. Assessment/Evaluation: 1. We will observe students working together; evaluate their use of rulers and the items they put in their treasure chest. Also, we will watch as the students measure their feet and compare to a ruler to check for understanding.
