HYDROGEN SULPHIDE 1. Hydrogen sulphide (H2S) is an extremely poisonous gas which, at low concentrations, smells like rotten eggs.

At higher concentrations (above about 100 PPM) persons exposed to hydrogen sulphide lose their sense of smell. Hydrogen sulphide is found in the West Kuwait (Minagish) and South-East Kuwait (Burgan) oil fields and in the Divided Zone. It may also be present in South Tank Farm. Hydrogen sulphide has different effects as exposure levels increase. The exposure levels and effects are : Exposure level Less than 1 PPM Less than 5 PPM Health effect H2S can be smelled (rotten eggs). No harmful effects. This amount can be smelled and is safe for 8 hours exposure without respiratory protection. This amount can be smelled and is safe for 10 minutes exposure without respiratory protection. Eyes, nose, throat, become irritated. No permanent effects. LOSS OF SENSE OF SMELL Dizziness, headaches, nausea, abdominal pains after 15 minutes, dangerous after 30 minutes exposure, rapidly produces unconsciousness and death if effective resuscitation is not applied. Victim is instantly unconscious and breathing stops. Death follows very quickly (1-2 minutes).
