DIFFERENTIATION OF INSTRUCTION Teachers are aware that not all students learn the same way. For the student who needs extra time to complete the assignments, he/she will have extended time. The third graders will be expected to complete at least five direction steps to find the treasure, and the second graders will be expected to complete at least three direction steps to find the treasure. The small groups will be separated by grade level. DEVELOPMENTAL PROCEDURES The students will watch a BrainPop Jr. movie on the SmartBoard entitled Reading a Map to introduce the compass rose and elements of maps. (What did you notice about how Moby and Annie read the map? What did they use to help them? What was the name of the item that told them where to go?) The students will participate in a whole group discussion about the compass rose and why it is important, while filling in the blanks of the North, South, East, or West? worksheet. (Have you ever heard of a compass? What do you already know about a compass? Why might a compass be important? When do you use a compass?) The students will work in small groups with a teacher or TA to complete A Pirates Life treasure map worksheet. The teacher or TA will model the worksheet as the students work on it. {How will we use the compass to find the pirates treasure? Which way is north? Can we use our first worksheet to help us? How?) ASSESSMENT Following the lesson about the compass rose, the teacher will review the treasure maps to see if the students have reached the treasure accurately. If the students have found the treasure they will be given a treasure incentive. INDEPENDENT PRACTICE Following the lesson, the students will complete the same North, South, East, or West? worksheet to reinforce the lesson. The same worksheet will be used because the students will have to refer to what they have already learned to recall the compass rose directions. An added bonus would be the cardinal directions. FOLLOW-UP Academic Enrichment: For the student who easily meets the objective, they will be introduced to cardinal directions (Northeast, Northwest, Southeast, Southwest) and be asked to add them to their compass rose. Academic Intervention: For the student who did not easily meet the objective, the teacher will work one-on-one with the student to help them, as well as have them make their own compass rose to help
