Developmental Appropriateness: My learning objectives are appropriate because students have prior knowledge of summarizing the concept of authority and give examples of people in authority. My learning objectives will meet the students social needs by the students being able to interact with one another and the teacher. My learning objective will meet the students physical needs by the students being able to write definitions and draw pictures for the terms using their locomotor skills. My learning objective will meet the students emotional needs by the students being able to give and receive constructive criticism. Assessment(s) of the Objectives: Students will be assessed based on their ability to copy what is being written on the chart paper. Students will also be assessed on their ability to create a picture based on their ideas of the terms. Accommodations: For the ESOL students I will give clear directions. I will also provide clear directions for the ADHD student. If students need re-teaching, then I will re-teach the lesson to the students that need help. I will also speak clearly so that the students will understand what they are learning about. Materials: Index cards, pencils, chart paper, sketch markers, and Ziploc bags. Use of Technology: There will be no technology used in this lesson. Procedures: 1. This week I will be teaching you all about the local, state, and national government. Does anyone know what a government is? (Allow a few responses from the students) A government is a group of people who work together to run a city, state, or country. (Write the term on chart paper) (Students will copy the definition when I am finished writing) 2. Today we are going to focus on the local government. Local is the city or county that we are living in now. What city do we leave in? (Allow students to respond) In the local government there are important leaders, along with citizens. community, state, and country. Citizens are you and I. (Write the term on chart paper) (Students will copy the definition when I am finished writing) 3. The terms that we are going to highlight today that are important to our local government are mayor, city council, judge, and police officers. 4. The first term we are going to look at is mayor. A mayor is the leader of a town or city. (Write the term on chart paper) (Students will copy the definition when I am finished writing) 5. The next term we are going to look at is city council. A city council works together with the mayor to make laws to help the citizens. (Write the term on chart paper) (Students will copy the definition when I am finished writing) 6. The next term we are going to learn about is police officers, which are people who make sure citizens are safe and obey laws. (Write the term on chart paper) (Students will copy the definition when I am finished writing) 7. And our final term is judge. Do you know what a judge does? (Allow a few responses from students) A judge decides if laws are broken. (Write the term on chart paper) (Students will copy the definition when I am finished writing) 8. We are going to be making booklets on our governments. The index cards are holed punched because we will be putting ribbons through them to make our booklets. 9. Now we are going to go back over the terms and definitions we highlighted for the day. (Go over terms) 10. Now we are going to draw pictures to represent the terms we learned today. You will draw the pictures on the back of the index card. I want you to create pictures based on what your ideas are for the terms. (After going back over the terms, have students to start on their illustrations for each term.) The students were able to draw pictures to represent the vocabulary so that they will have a better understanding. I will use index cards, chart paper, markers, and Ziploc bags.
