Victoria McDonald Date: March 25, 2013 Grade: First School: Mathews Elementary Teacher: Lori Ashley Subject: English Language Arts Lesson: Writing Thank You Letters South Carolina English Language Arts State Standards Writing 1-5 The student will write for a variety of purposes and audiences. Indicator 1-5.1 Create written communications (for example, thank you notes) for specific audience. EEDA: 2 Students will demonstrate decision-making Safe School Climate Act: SECTION 59-63-140. Local school districts to adopt policies prohibiting harassment; required components; model policies by State Board of Education; bullying prevention programs. (3) a description of appropriate student behavior; Objective: Students will create thank you letters for someone who has done something special for them. Assessments: Students will construct a thank you letter to someone that has done something special for them. Each letter should include a date, greeting, body (explaining why they are thanking this person), closing, and signature. Materials: Thank You, Mr. Falkner by Patricia Polacco pencils crayons paper thank you letter template SMART Board Prerequisites (Prior Knowledge): Students are familiar with writing for specific reasons. Students have written letters to their mothers once this semester and they were taught the different parts of letter. Procedures:

1. Gather students and read, Thank You, Mr. Falkner by Patricia Polacco 2. After reading the book we will have a class discussion about special people in our lives 3. Ask students what those people have done for them 4. After the class discussion model how to write a thank you letter on the SMART Board. a. Allow students to assist in writing the letter by asking for their input and ideas. 5. Explain all the parts of a letter (including date, greeting, body, closing, and signature) 6. When everyone has finished writing their thank you letters, allow students to share if they would like too. a. Encourage students to speak out loud and project their voices so the entire class can hear. 7. At the conclusion of the lesson, all thank you letters will be taken up to record those that followed directions and included all parts of a proper letter. Accommodations: At this time there are no special accommodations that need to be made at this time. Some students may need more encouragement than others, however. If any special accommodations need to be made once the lesson has started, changes will be made that are developmental appropriate for students case by case.
