Sixth Grade/Math

Setting: P.S.37 is in an upcoming neighborhood. The majority of the students are Hispanic and speak Spanish. The classroom contains 9 tables, which have 3 chairs at each. At one table located by the door there is a lower desk that fits under it where a girl in a wheelchair sits. The classroom has lockers used on by the homeroom class. There is a Smart Board where all of the lessons are taught. There are three computers in the back of the room where students who have extra time play academic games. The room is filled with colorful charts which previous lessons were recorded on. There is a behavior chart in the front of the classroom for each of the three classes. There is a math word wall and lots of math posters which cover up almost every inch of the room. The teacher has her own desk, which is located by the windows. Date of Lesson: April 11, 2013 Purpose: The students have the math state test coming up in a few weeks and they need to review. In order to review for the test the students need a review of each of the topics that they learned this past year. Ratios and unit rates are topics that were covered in the beginning of the year. Essential Questions: - How can we write ratios to represent a variety of rates? - How can we use ratios and rates to solve real-world and mathematical problems. Vocabulary & Key Terms: Ratio a quotient of 2 numbers used to compare these numbers. Rate a ratio comparing 2 different quantities. (ex. Pens to pencils) Unit Rate a rate in which the 2nd number is 1, or the quantity of 1. Skills: The students will be able to show the following skills: -effectively listening in the classroom -answering questions during, and after the lesson -quietly raising hands to answer or ask a question -ability to work together in groups at their table -participating in group discussions Objectives: Students will be able to write statements as ratios and rates Students will be able to set up ratios from given information Students will be able to find the unit rate in a word problem Students will be able to use ratios and rates to solve real-world and mathematical problems Standards: Math
CCSS.Math-Ratios & Proportional Relationships 6.R.P Understand ratio concepts and use ratio reasoning to solve problems. 1. Understand the concept of a ratio and use ratio language to describe a ratio relationship between two quantities. For example, The ratio of wings to beaks in the bird house at the zoo was 2:1, because for every 2 wings there was 1 beak. For every vote candidate A received, candidate C received nearly three votes.

2. Understand the concept of a unit rate a/b associated with a ratio a:b with b 0, and use rate language in the context of a ratio relationship. For example, This recipe has a ratio of 3 cups of flour to 4 cups of sugar, so there is 3/4 cup of flour for each cup of sugar. We paid $75 for 15 hamburgers, which is a rate of $5 per hamburger. 3. Use ratio and rate reasoning to solve real-world and mathematical problems, e.g., by reasoning about tables of equivalent ratios, tape diagrams, double number line diagrams, or equations. b. Solve unit rate problems including those involving unit pricing and constant speed. For example, if it took 7 hours to mow 4 lawns, then at that rate, how many lawns could be mowed in 35 hours? At what rate were lawns being mowed?

Language Arts
CCSS.ELA-Literacy.SL.6.1 Engage effectively in a range of collaborative discussions (one-on-one, in groups, and teacher-led) with diverse partners on grade 6 topics, texts, and issues, building on others ideas and expressing their own clearly.

Pre-Assessment: The objectives are appropriate for the learners because it follows the 6th grade New York State Learning Standards for Mathematics. The students have already learned this topic but it was taught in the beginning of the year. In preparation of the state math exam reviewing these concepts are important, especially if the students had a hard time with it when it was first taught. Lesson Presentation: Set Induction As the period begins the teacher will welcome the students at the door and tell them to quietly come in and sit down. The teacher will have the Aim and Do Now on the Smart Board and the teacher will instruct the students to begin the Do Now. As the students settle in the teacher will walk around to make sure that the students are doing what they are suppose to be doing. The teacher can assist the students if they need help but the Do Now should be a review of what they recently learned. When the teacher sees that the students are done with the Do Now the teacher will then go over it. The teacher will have the students answer the questions The teacher will allow some time for students to ask any questions. After going over the Do Now the teacher will then begin the lesson. Procedure: The teacher will then read the Aim to the class so the students understand what they are going to learn. The teacher will inform the students that this is all review. The teacher will go to the 2nd slide and go over the questions about finding the ratios of the black and red pens. The teacher will make sure that they dont have any questions and then the teacher will move on to the 3rd slide. This slide will be about rates. Have the students write down the definition and the examples in their notebooks. The first problem the teacher will do and the second problem both the teacher and the student will do. The teacher will make sure that none of the students have any questions and will then move on to the 4th slide on unit rates. The teacher will have the students copy down the definition as well as the example problems. The teacher will demonstrate how to do the first problem and then work with the students to solve the second. The teacher will answer any questions. The teacher will then go to the 5th slide and explain in more detail that we use ratios and rates in every day life. The teacher will demonstrate how to do the first problem and then together the teacher and the students will solve the second problem. The teacher will have a 6th slide to see if the students remember proportions. Depending on if they do the teacher can base the next

review lesson off of this. The teacher will then hand out a worksheet and the students will have to complete it. This will be used as the exit slip. The teacher will go over the instructions with them and then they will complete it. Closure: When students are done, the teacher will collect the worksheets. The teacher will then quickly go over the answers on the Smart Board and answer any last minute questions. The teacher will also hand out a homework sheet that the students have to complete. Materials and Resources: - laptop - Smart Board - Smart Notebook - Worksheets - Pencils Follow-Up Activity: The students will be given a homework sheet. This homework sheet will reinforce the students knowledge of ratios and unit rates. This homework sheet will be used as a measurement of assessment. Evaluation/Assessment: The teacher will be able to determine if the student met the objectives by the rubric below Rubric: Category Comprehension of finding ratios, rates, and unit rates. 3 Student is able to correctly answer 4-5 questions on the worksheet given in class. Student is able to correctly answer 5-6 questions on the homework sheet. Student participated frequently in group discussions. 2 Student is able to correctly answer 2-3 questions on the worksheet given in class. Student is able to correctly answer 3-4 questions on the homework sheet. Student participated a little in group discussions. 1 Student is able to correctly answer 0-1 questions on the worksheet given in class. Student is able to correctly answer 2-0 questions on the homework sheet. Student didnt participate in group discussion.

Comprehension of finding ratios, rates, and unit rates in the homework. Participation in group discussion.

Differentiated: There is a student in the class who is in the wheel chair. This student will be placed in the front of the room out of anyones way. The student will have accesses to the Smart Board if called on to show work on it. The student also has a desk that is lower than others so she has a desk to work on.
