RHS WISLEY GARDENS, 15TH April 2008

Family Learning : Papermaking with children and adults Papermaker Jonathan Korejko from Timberland , near Lincoln, spent the day working in the Clore Learning Centre with parents, children, and RHS staff, teaching everyone the joys and wonder of making paper from recycled materials and plants from the garden. The Clore Centre is an excellent resource, spacious, and well lit. It looks out over the Wisley teaching garden and the new glasshouses, and provides easy access to the whole of the RHS garden. There were two papermaking sessions on the day, with more than 25 people taking part in the morning and afternoon. We collected plant material from the garden, and learned how to make paper pulp from recycled paper. Everyone then got the opportunity to create a number of sheets, whilst also making new friends and having a great time. The handmade papers which were made on this day will not only be souvenirs of this visit to a much loved RHS garden, but also a physical reminder of the flowers, leaves, grass, and compost ! which we found at Wisley.

Everyone worked together, and learned about the different stages of making handmade paper: 1) forming the pulp on the mould, 2) couching the new paper onto the curved tabletop 3) and finally, pressing the wet sheets, which were then packaged for transport, along with instructions on how to dry the papers at home .
