Although I believe all children are individuals, I've found that students learn at their highest potential when four main factors are present. The first is a safe and positive environment where students feel comfortable to express themselves and take risks to further their education. Students should also play a large role in the set up of their classroom community. They should have say in the behavior goals and classroom management methods. It is my belief if students set goals for themselves and their peers rather than having me decide for them, they will be more likely to hold themselves accountable. Not only does involvement and choice foster self-advocacy, but independence and intrinsic motivation as well. Students need to be willing to put in the work necessary for academic achievement. I could offer all the rewards in the world, but if students feel the work they are doing is not interesting or will positively affect them, they will not get much out the curriculum. I also believe learning should not only take place in the classroom, so students benefit from parental involvement. When students know they will able share what they learned in school with an adult, they will get more out of their education. Lastly, students also require their needs to be met. Every student has different learning and emotional needs, but if they feel supported and treated as an equal, it can be viewed as a positive aspect of our learning community. My experiences as a student and as an educator have shaped my view of what an effective teacher consists of. Each student's learning needs, behavioral needs, interests, and ability levels should be considered when planning successful lessons. Lessons should have their objectives and learning goals clearly stated for the students and should be presented in interesting ways. Students should be able to see the purpose of the lesson and why it is necessary to learn it. I have come to value this idea because of my own experiences as a student. Math was presented to me through rote learning and I never understood how I would apply it outside the classroom. Due to this, I did not enjoy math throughout my grade school education and therefore did not apply myself in that subject to the best of my ability. I believe that students should be held to high standards and treated as individuals. Differentiation in lessons and assessment is key to individual achievement. Students should have choices in how they express what they have learned because "successes" look different for each student. My students will always know how much I value their success and respect them as a group as well as individually.
