Understanding and Analyzing Population Pyramids PART 3: Criterion A: Knowing & Understanding: Uses development terms appropriately to describe the population structure of your chosen country. The interpretation should show an understanding of what a population pyramid can show about a countrys development, using details from the pyramids to illustrate ideas. PART 4: Criterion C: Thinking Critically: Analyze how changes between 2000 and 2050 in the population structure can create problems for the country you chose by presenting reasons why the changes might take place. Your country: India

DESCRIPTION OF THE POPULATION PYRAMID IN 2000: The shape of the population pyramid above is an expansive pyramid; this is because this pyramid has a broad base which helps indicate high proportion of population growth and lower population of elderly people. The pyramid shape shows that there is a rapid birth rate and a low population of elderly people in the population. The shape shows that the male and female ratio in India is somewhat equal, as the bars for each genders age group are almost equal lengths. We can see that this the numbers arent exactly equal, as there are 65 million of male children being born and around 52 million of female children being born demonstrating almost similar male to female ratio in India. Indias population is more dependent than independent as there is huge birth rate around 117 million. This means that the amount of population is mostly young age (0-4), making India have more dependent to independent ratio as more children are being born. The death rate in India is considered to be high as the population in old ages hardly passes 13 million, which is less compared to the other age groups.

DESCRIPTION OF POPULATION PYRAMID IN 2050: The shape of the population pyramid above is a mixture of expansive and stationary data, as you can see a lower proportion of eldest population (90100) in India and soon the shape turns into a stationary data shape as there is roughly the same amount of people in each age group. The birth rate is good birth rate as; its population as its population is somewhat similar to the other age groups. The male to female ratio in this population pyramid is exactly the same as the bars for both genders have equal lengths. The death rate for men is high, but for women it is not as high as the men but, is still a bit high. The woman population and men population are different an example of this is at the 90-94 age group there is around 5 million of female and male around 2 million. The

The life expectancy not higher than 80 years, as there is a bit population in the 80 years section, but above 80 there is very less population. Overall, I feel that India is a under developed country as the country has a high birth rate, high death rate, more dependent population, almost similar male to female ratio and life expectancy isnt as high.

dependency ratio will be more dependent than independent as child birth has decreased and the population in the old ages has become high. The fertility rate in India is not as high, as there is birth rate at 106 million. The life expectancy would be easy to live for 80 years as there is a good amount of population in the 80 -84 age group. Overall, I feel that India has become more developed as the country as it has a not as high birth rate, high death rate, more independent population, not as high fertility rate, equal male to female ratio and high life expectancy.

Analysis of the changes in the population structure over time PART 4: Criterion C: Thinking Critically
What are the predicted changes in the population structure between 2000 and 2050? Can you identify possible reasons for these predicted changes? During the year 2000 to 2050 few changes occurred with the development of the country India. One of the changes that had occurred was that there were more elder people who came into the India society. I feel that a reason for this change to occur would be because of stronger health care in the country. The health care of India had increased compared to 2000 probably because there were more hospitals to help the elder people in the society. Another reason for greater health care could be because of more effective medicines. I feel that this can be another factor helping us prove the reason for Indias development, as medicines help the society recover from sickness and if they use medicines in a good use when its needed it can help the society a lot and make India a more develop country. Another change in India is that there are less children being born meaning less birth rate. I feel a reason because of this is that in 2050 the families understand clearly how to take care of a child and what responsibilities are needed. I feel that they learned this and reduced the child birth because they couldnt bring up a child in success. Another reason of this could be that in 2050 the payment for child birth increased making it hard for people to afford to have a baby. What problems might the country face in the future from these predicted changes in its population? Give reasons for your ideas.

I feel that low death rate would create a lot of problems in the society. A problem that could occur is that the low death rate can lead to a higher population of elderly people in the society making India mostly of old people. This can be a problem as more old society would make the country poorer and poorer as the elderly people will not be able to support themselves and this will make the population mostly poor. I feel that low birth rate could lead into less need of schools as there are fewer children. If there are less needs of schools than there would be a less need of teachers, making teachers not financially supported. Then India will soon become a country with less people at working age and the teachers wont be able to support themselves and their families. Explain how a countrys population structure is connected to development? I feel that the countrys population structure is connected to development as the population pyramid helps indicate birth rate, death rate, dependency ratio, fertility rate, male to female ratio life expectancy and Infant mortality, which are few essential factors needed to help indicate whether a country is developed or not. If we werent given these factors it would be really hard to make judgement of the countries development, as the factors help a lot and without them we would be able to understand a countries development in depth and understand countries different aspect of development.
