PHYSICAL EDUCATION UNIT: Football (Technology) SKILLS: How to Throw and Catch a Football GRADE LEVEL: 8th grade

AGENDA: INTRO Warm Up (2-3 minutes) o Jumping Jacks o High knees o Arm Circles o ~Freeze tag if time is allowed~ Overview (2-3 minutes) Throwing **Students will be called in pairs to be videotaped and analyzed to see what they are doing wrong in their form** o Explain how to grip a football. Ring finger should be on the first or second lace depending on hand size. Allow fingers to spread over the ball naturally. Thumb is placed on under side of the ball. o Throwing-demonstrate how to throw the ball. Throwing with palm facing away from the body, off hand is on the ball to secure the ball. Bring elbows up to your shoulders. Step with front foot, opposite of throwing arm and throw the ball from your ear. Let the ball roll of your pointer finger and snap down with your wrist. Palm should finish down and out with follow through. Catching **Students will be called in pairs to be videotaped and analyzed to see what they are doing wrong in their form** o You can only catch what you see. You watch the nose of the ball and catch the Cone (nose) of the ball. If the ball is above your waist, make a diamond with your two index and two thumb fingers. If it is below your waist put the tip of your pinkies together and catch the cone. WATCH THE BALL, WATCH THE BALL! Drills: Partner knee throwing and catching Get in pairs, 10 yards apart. While on your knees with the opposite knee up from your throwing arm, practice throwing bringing your arm across your body while using the right form and snapping down across your body. The other partner receiving the ball uses the diamond and pinky method to catch the ball. Upright throwing and catching Standing up right, students will use the same methods with standing up tall in the pocket and delivering the ball while their partner catches the ball with the methods taught. (diamond, pinky)

TEACHING POINTS: Hold the ball tight so the ball doesnt get knocked out by the defense. Cognitive: Students will learn about the origin of


football, how to catch and throw, as well as how football has evolved from its beginning days through a video as well as a written test.

Quiz over the origin as well as, the proper form and technique of throwing and catching a football at the end of the lesson. Qualitative and Quantitative checklist/form during the game which asses if the students have learned to demonstrate sportsmanship.

Affective: Each student will demonstrate good


sportsmanship as well as teamwork with encouraging words for their teammates. They also will show good sportsmanship with the referees judgment calls.
