6th Grade Lesson Plan Name: Egyptian Writing and Art/Kushite Society Class/Subject: 6th grade Social Studies:

Ancient Egypt Date: February 17, 2012 Student Objectives: To develop an understanding of how Ancient Egyptian culture communicated through the use of an intricate writing system To Explore and critically think about the different forms of Egyptian Artwork and Architecture To Understand the complex relationship between the Kush and the Egyptians Content Standards: 18.A.3 Explain how language, literature, the arts, architecture and traditions contribute to the development and transmission of culture. 18.B.3a Analyze how individuals and groups interact with and within institutions (e.g., educational, military). Materials/Resources/Technology: Pens/Pencils/Paper Powerpoint Googe Earth Youtube(Flashdrive)

Teachers Goals: To use visually appealing examples as well as hands on activities to check for student learning To provide a variety of outlets for different learning styles including visual, auditory, kinesthetic, and text based stimulations

Time: 7:50 Start of Class: Teachers will introduce hieroglyphic assignment to class and have them work on the message individually. Once the students have completed the message the teachers will ask for a volunteer to read the message to the class.

Introduction of Lesson: Teachers will use power point to go over the key terms and main ideas of writing and art in Egypt. Hieroglyphics, Rosetta Stone, Papyrus, Scribes, Sphinxes, Obelisk. Lesson Instruction: Teachers will ask the students to write at least half a page describing how the sphinx lost its nose. After students are done, the teachers will ask for volunteers to read their story out loud to the class. Teacher will then use google earth to take students on a virtual tour of a few of the landmarks of ancient Egypt. Assessments/Checking for Understanding: Teachers will have students look through the textbook and write down the main ideas and the big ideas of the lesson. Teacher will collect notes when they are finished. Closure/Wrap-Up/Review: Teacher will sum up the main Ideas and Big Ideas and give students a short break before moving on to the next section. Start of Lesson: Teacher will explain the Main Ideas of the Kush section which consists of Geography, Relationship with the Egyptians, and the Rise and fall of the Kush Introduction of Lesson: Teachers will begin by showing the class a map of Africa that is in the online textbook. The map highlights where the Kushite society lived. The teacher will ask the class what two natural landmarks border the Kush and the Egyptians(Sahara and the Nile) and ask the students what living next to the Nile River provides for a civilization Lesson Instruction: Teachers will use power point to go over the key terms of the section and the three main sections as outlined by the textbook. Teachers will put emphasis on the fertile land, trade and war with the neighboring Egyptians, and both periods of decline and power in the Kush timeline. Assessments/Checking for Understanding: Teachers will have students look through the textbook and write down the main ideas and the big ideas of the lesson. Teacher will collect notes when they are finished. Closure/Wrap-Up/Review: The Egyptians were not the only civilization that used the Nile to prosper which created a unique relationship between the Kush and the Egyptians. While they relied on each other for trade, they conquered each other as well.
