Coimbatore, Feb. 3 While being responsive to change, one must be creative; not just think out of
the box but “break the box”, said Mr Pradeep Yuvaraj, Director (Education and Learning),
Finerva Financial Solutions Private Ltd.

Speaking on Creativity in Business at SSM Engineering College, School of Management

Studies, Mr Yuvaraj took the students through a thought-provoking interactive session. His
presentation was part of the Business Line Club programme at SSM College.

The students were puzzled with his puzzles. Though they appeared simple and easy, one had to
think logically to arrive at the answer. The students said the exercise made them realise the
narrowness of their thought process.

Mr Yuvaraj called upon the students to stop using “assume”, as “it is nothing but making an ‘ass’
out of ‘u’ and ‘me’.”

“The present day’s business needs are quite different from what they were even two years ago.
Technology is changing, innovations are happening at a rapid pace and the biggest challenge is
in retaining talent. It is imperative for business leaders to seek creative answers rather than
run-of-the-mill solutions. And, creativity is not limited to one field or a particular period of
time,” he said.

Attitude change
Creative thinking has no order or rule, is neither systematic nor process driven, yet (like
business), it involves a certain amount of risk and uncertainty, said Mr Yuvaraj. The gradual
evolution of business from agricultural to industrial age, to information and now to the
conceptual age requires creators and empathisers rather than mechanical workers, he said, and
urged the young minds to change their attitude and look at life from a different perspective.

“Knowledge is created by the learner and not given by the teacher,” Mr Yuvaraj said.

The Chairman of SSM Group of Institutions, Dr M.S. Mathivanan, and the Regional General
Manager of The Hindu, Mr D. Rajkumar, were among those who spoke on the occasion.
