Procedures tell us how to do something. This might include instructions for how to carry out a task or

Structure: Procedures are usually organised to include: v The goal of the activity v Any materials needed to achieve the goal v Steps to accomplish the goal Some procedures have additional stages such as explaining reasons for a step, providing alternative steps, giving cautions, or mentioning possible consequences. Directions, rules and spoken procedures will have slightly different structure from those that give instructions to make something. Week 2 Introduction to the text type Group activity Tues/Thurs Thursday morning
*Pre- Assessment Ask the students to write instructions about how to clean their teeth these should be written as if the reader is an alien who has never encountered tooth brushing before. *Introduction to the text type: Play the learning object: Lets make a mask (TALE). As the procedure plays, have students follow it and make the mask. *Deconstruction text structure Display the headings Title, Goal, Materials and Steps on IWB. Remind students of the structure of a procedure as the titles are put into position on the IWB. Display procedures for Lets make a mask on the IWB. Re-read the text revisiting the purpose of each section. Point out that the materials are presented in a list. Identify the steps and note the numbers used for sequencing. Link the final step to the goal.

Thursday afternoon
*Sequencing activity Provide students with a blank procedure template for making a mask, along with pictures for each step. Children write the aim and materials in the spaces provided. Paste pictures in the correct order and write a sentence for each step.

Week 3 Deconstructing with a grammar focus Group activity Tues/Thurs Thursday morning
*Reread Make a lion mask procedure and have students identify and highlight the verbs. *Students can write a simple procedure for washing hands, using a different coloured pencil to show verb usage. *Making slime Display various recipes for making slime and have students identify the main parts of the procedure and note importance of pictures in helping us understand the procedure. Point out and discuss the fact that verbs are written in present tense. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=urnmjzQYW4 Students watch the above video whilst completing the Making slime worksheet, adding the list of ingredients and procedural steps. Students make the slime and teacher takes photographs. During Week 4 computer lesson, students can type this procedure, adding photographs to accompany each step.

Thursday afternoon
*Cloze activity Show class the IWB version of How to clean your teeth from MacMillan Interactive Non Fiction Text Types. Point out the adverbs, adverbial and adjectival phrases that give more detailed information. Discuss their importance. Students complete a cloze activity requiring them to insert adverbs into a set of instructions.

Group activity
You Tube: How to sneak your monster into school. Watch the clip above which finishes by telling us that you need: *a clown nose, big sunglasses, a pink wig* to sneak your monster into school. Students use the template provided to write the steps for sneaking their monster into school.

Thursday morning
*Model the writing of a procedure explaining how to put on sunscreen. *Watch Telmo & Tula Tuna sandwich on You Tube *Identify each ingredient and step in the procedure. Using a scaffold, students turn this information into a procedure. Provide support as required. Evaluate writing using a checklist.

Friday afternoon
*Sherbet Shop Provide students with the three ingredients needed to make sherbet (citric acid, icing sugar, bicarbonate of soda, jelly crystals) and explain the functions of each element. *bitter add more sugar *not fizzy add more c.a or bicarb Students experiment with various combinations, recording each time and only using a small spoon, until they have the perfect recipe. Students write a procedure for the perfect sherbet!

Thursday afternoon
*How to make pancakes cut and paste

Week 5 Ice cream in a bag? Monday - Computer activity Wednesday morning


(Swap Literacy groups to Thursday) Ice cream in a bag? *Students are given the investigative task Ice-cream in a bag. With a partner, they must look online to determine if ice cream really can be made in a bag, and what the best recipe is for it. Students must take into consideration Australian conversions, ease of recipe and equipment available. Ice cream in a bag? *Using research from earlier in the week, students work with their partner to write a procedure for making ice cream in a bag. Students must include all necessary materials so that the teacher can obtain these in time for the lesson. Reiterate the grammatical functions and layout of a procedural text.

Friday afternoon
*Ice cream in a bag? Teacher has necessary ingredients prepared. Swap recipes amongst groups and have students follow another groups recipe to make ice cream in a bag. Follow up was it easy to follow someone elses recipe? What would you change? Did it work? Were the instructions clear?

Thursday afternoon Post Assessment


*Read the story Wombat Stew. Deconstruct the story and ensure all the ingredients and key words are displayed. Students use this information to write the recipe for wombat stew.
