Question 1

A. Explain the range of different types of conflict that can occur in an organization. Answer: In my own understanding, conflict is inevitable in every aspect of life, so does in an organization. Conflict is a dispute or misunderstanding of between two parties. The most five types of conflict are as follows interdependence conflicts, differences in styles, differences in background/gender, differences in leadership, and personality clashes (http://www.leadership-and-motivation-training.com/types-of-conflict-in-the-workplace.html). Interdependence conflict occurs when one of your co-workers depends on your output or result of your task in order for him to get his job done. Example given: An IT supervisor depends on your project for database so he can finally summarized all the details of its operation. Unfortunately, you didnt finish the task on time because of personal reasons. And now, his work is at risk. Differences in style mean that there are people who preferred to have his own style of doing the task. There are people once given the tasks and deadline, will focus and quickly right away starts to do this job on or before the deadline. Others work differently; they are some who will not do it right away unless the due is soon, cramming part. Differences in background/gender, as we come in different walks of life, background, and personal experiences, conflict will arise any time at the moment you clash out within the workplace because work-related issues. Differences in leadership, leaders have many ways of leading their team. Staff or employees need to cope up with their leaders demands the whole entire day. Making some of the employees irritated, confused or just want to give up. Personality clashes happens and does creates conflict in the workplace fueled by emotions.

B. Explain what procedure should be in place and followed to manage these conflicts There is a difference between resolving a conflict and managing conflict. Resolving a conflict ends the dispute by satisfying the interests of both parties. Managing a conflict contains specialized interaction that prevents a dispute from becoming a destructive battle. Managing a

conflict attends to the personal issues so as to allow for a constructive relationship, even though the objective issues may not be resolvable

(http://conflict911.com/guestconflict/conflictinorgs.htm). A key to successful of resolving or managing conflict is to both parties must have an open mind and thus the manager and the immediate leader should be in the middle and not being a biased. A good procedure is first to talk personally with them, hearing the two sides of the story. Next is to discuss positive ways wherein they can resolve their issues in most peaceful manner. Question 2 Answer:

B. Explain what could have been done to prevent the conflict.

Question 3 (L02 Assessment Criteria 2.3)

Answer A OR B

A. Select and describe a conflict which has occurred in your own organisation or one you can research, and evaluate how effectively that conflict was managed focusing primarily on that organisations procedures which were in place and being followed. B. Read the case study and evaluate how effectively the conflict was managed focusing primarily on the procedures which were in place and being followed. Case Study Petunia is a senior manager in Magic Wonder Call Centre (Pty) Ltd, and Lerato is a manager indirectly reporting to her for the last two years. One day Petunia instructs Lerato to make copies of a document for an urgent meeting. When Lerato does not, in the view of

Petunia, do this quickly enough, an altercation takes place which leads to Petunia accusing Lerato of insubordination. Nothing comes of the incident, until two months later when Lerato lodges a grievance that she was unfairly moved from the window office, accusing Petunia of victimising her. Lerato is offered an alternative position in another department in response to the grievance, but she refuses to take it, saying that it would be a boring, dead end job. Lerato starts to lobby staff against Petunias management style saying that Petunia has something against strong women and giving them mundane tasks to undermine them. She then starts refusing to take instructions from Petunia saying that she does not directly report to Petunia. Petunia claims she could not even talk to Lerato. The tension starts impacting on performance in Magic Wonder.

Petunia approaches the human resources department and asks them to take disciplinary action against Lerato for undermining her authority and for being insubordinate. Lerato is charged and, after internal disciplinary measures taken, dismissed.
