Name of Lesson Animal Webs

Grade Level:

Subject:

Science

Prepared by: Brittany Norwood

Overview and Purpose (include content): The purpose of this lesson is to teach students about the types of predators and the food that different animals eat. The students will use technology to make a visual representation of their learning.

Education Standards Addressed: (TEKS and 21st Century Skills) (9) Organisms and environments. The student knows that the living environment is composed of relationships between organisms and the life cycles that occur. The student is expected to: (C) gather evidence of interdependence among living organisms such as energy transfer through food chains and animals using plants for shelter. Materials Needed and Technology Resources Needed: Computers

Lesson Objective (specify skills and information that will be learned): After using direct instruction to teach them the information, the students will demonstrate their understanding of the material by making a Kidspiration food web.

Information (give and demonstrate necessary information): In circle time, I would have the key words for the lesson on the board; Predator, Producer, Consumer, Prey, Herbivore, Carnivore, Omnivore.

Kidspiration Key words Animal pictures

Verification (Steps to check for student understanding): The students will put magnetic animals on the board under the correct term. I will ask in whole group a few questions:
Why are green plants called producers? (They make their own food.) Why are animals considered consumers? (They get their food from plants or other animals.) What is a predator? (An animal that eats other animals.) What is a prey? (The animal"a consumer"that is being eaten.)

Notes: Content- Science Knowledge- Food webs Technology- Kidspiration

In groups of two the students will make a food web on the computer using Kidspiration. We will use these to asses their knowledge of the lesson.

Activity (List and describe the tasks (be very specific about pedagogy): I will grab their attention by connecting them back to prior knowledge of the Lion King. The students will first learn the information in whole group during circle time. I will tell them all about the terms and give them examples from the Lion King. The predator is the Lion, the Prey is the Antelope, Producers are the grass, Consumers

are the animals, Herbivore is the Antelope, Carnivore is the Lion. After discussion we will work together to put the different animals under the right column. First we will do Producer and Consumer. Then we will do Herbivore, Carnivore, Omnivore. Producer: Grass, Trees, Flowers, Plants Consumer: Birds, Fish, People, Herbivore: Giraffe, Horse, Cow, Carnivore: Lion, Tigers, Hawks Omnivore: Humans, Bears, Monkeys
