Emerging Technologies

Emerging Technologies (ET) investigates IT technologies, architectures, and strategies that support Penn State's mission and strategic plan.

Introduction
Emerging Technologies investigates new information technologies with the goal of reducing the time to market for new information technology services and capabilities which will help Penn State achieve its goals in teaching, research, and service. Current ET investigative areas represent a broad cross-section of IT areas. Some investigations are already in action, while others are on the drawing board or farther out on the horizon. As the territory for emerging technologies continues to develop at an accelerated pace, ET will play a crucial role in helping to identify, prototype, evaluate, and sometimes build those systems that will enable technology to serve the needs of Penn State students, faculty, and staff.

Definition
New technologies that are currently developing or will be developed over the next five to ten years, and which will substantially alter the business and social environment. These include information technology, wireless data communication, man-machine communication, ondemand printing, bio-technologies, and advanced robotics.
