Student Objectives

Freshmen Honors English: Lord of the Flies

Students will be able to articulate major points in the development of the different themes of Lord of the Flies and explain how those events in the novel led to the creation of that theme. Students will be able to collaborate with their group members to identify the correct answer for the reading comprehension review questions. Content Standards Common Core 9-10.R.L.2 Key Ideas and Details: Determine a theme or central idea of a text and analyze in detail its development over the course of the text, including how it emerges and is shaped and rened by specic details; provide an objective summary of the text. Common Core 9-10.R.L.1 Key Ideas and Details: Cite strong and thorough textual evidence to support analysis of what the text says explicitly as well as inferences drawn from the text. Materials Students: Lord of the Flies book, Study Guides Teacher: Lord of the Flies book, overhead markers, wipes, makeshift boards, Jeopardy cards/questions Check for Understanding By having students work in smalls groups during the review game, students that are having difculties understanding the text or have not caught up with the reading will have a chance to participate in the review. Also by making the review a game, students will be encouraged to participate more than reading from a study guide and asking questions.

Start of Class -Students work on vocabulary words 121 and 122 (on overhead) and sentence structure. -Go over sentence structure for both words by having the students walk me through the process of marking the subjects, verbs, dependent, and independent clauses.

Time 10 mins

Lesson Instruction -Go over theme posters from the previous day: make sure students understand how the events from the novel connect with these arguments/themes that William Golding is trying to create.

Freshmen Honors English: Lord of the Flies

-Tell students to put themselves in groups of 3 or 4 (spread out/move desks). -Give each group: paper towel, clorox wipe, makeshift board, and overhead pen. -Tell students we are going to play a jeopardy review game! -Rules of Jeopardy: 1) 30 seconds to answer the question once it has been read. 2) Answer must be in form of a question (What is ______? or Who is ______?) 3) If you shout out an answer, you team automatically loses 100 points. 4) NO STUDY GUIDES / BOOKS / NOTES 5) Group with the most points at the end wins! -Choose group closest to the window to start choosing the category and move around room front that point on. ***See attached sheet for Jeopardy Questions/Answers***

-Homework for Monday: Finish Character Statuses (11 total: Chapters 2-12). -Test: 40 questions total (multiple choice, ll in blank, true/false, matching) and 1 short essay
