I. Objectives What is the main focus of this lesson? The spatial difference between England & the Colonies, and between the 3 different colonies. How does this lesson tie in to your Big Idea This will let the students know that the colonists wanted to be independent in what goods and services they purchased and from where. Becoming less dependent and more independent. What are your objectives for this lesson? (As many as needed.) Indicate connections to applicable national or state standards. If an objective applies to only certain students write the name(s) of the student(s) to whom it applies. Indicate themes addressed in thread (ex-Geography-human environment interaction) 1) Students will be able to locate England and the 3 colonies on a map 2) Students will be able to explain how far England is compared to the other colonies. 3) Students will be able to demonstrate how trading works 4) Students will be able to describe how the colonies traded with each other and England. Assessment (formative and summative)

III. The Plan Time Parts Motivation (Opening/ Introduction/ Engagement)

The description of (script for) the lesson, wherein you describe teacher activities and student activities 1. Look up England on the world map and put a push pin at London 2. Put push pins at each of the 3 colonies 3. Place a string between each of the push pins with a piece of paper with the duration of travel between the 2 points

Set up activity a. 4 groups of students i. 3 groups will represent the colonies ii. 1 group will represent England b. Present each group with an envelope of various goods (each group will have different items in their envelope) and a certain amount of money. The colonists will have less than the group representing England c. Place pieces of paper on the floor between the groups of students Allow the students to trade with one another a. Sending messengers or letters to negotiate trade b. Have students keep a trading log c. One second on each piece of paper between the groups will represent one day of travel d. Trading costs: i. Walking: $1 ii. Horse: $3 iii. Horse & Wagon: $5 iv. Boat: $10

Closure

Have each group write a paragraph about which group trading was easier with and why. Which group would you rather trade with? Can you survive without the goods from England? Have a spokesperson from each group read their paragraph. Allow students 5 minutes to write in their daily journal about what they learned.
