Dr. Massey Natonya D. Huggins 5/5/2013 Renovations and expansion of St. Mary Annes library.

Please permit me to share with you the background knowledge about this library and how the recommendations will enhance the meaningful services of this school and community. I wish to state that the area of the library must be extended in order to accommodate the renovations of St. Mary Anne's library media center space. St. Mary Anne's library was last fully updated in the 1980s, with new bookshelves. In 2006, new rectangular tables were brought into the library to accommodate student use and in 2008; a new circulation desk was purchased. The current setup of the library is cramped and does not make for easy access of the users. When the computers were moved into the library the Fiction section was reduced to two shelves and the Everyone's books was also relocated. These current conditions do not promote the vision of St. Mary Anne's library which is to ensure a climate of success for children to be productive citizens of the next millennium. Our vision cannot be fully achieved given the current condition of the library. St. Mary Anne's library is the hub of the school. It is where almost every faculty meeting takes places, and where every child comes at least once a week for classes. The librarian supports the learning community by reinforcing skills taught in the classroom. It also currently houses the St. Mary Anne's computer lab, so students are coming in to do research, play instructional games, or just surf the web. We recommend that new computers be purchased and that they come enclosed inside the workstation tables. We believe that the rationale of this purchase is solid given the fact that when the computers are not being use, the table space will serve as a desk for students to complete their hand writing assignments and provide an area for community meetings. These recommendations are fully supported by our stakeholders, especially the recommendation concerning the expansion of library which will accommodate community meetings or events.

I urge you to consider the items outlined in the summary below. These upgrades will convey to the students and the staff that the library is indeed the place to come. Expand the total perimeter of the library Upgrade electrical wiring (as the new computer and equipment will put an extra demand on the old wiring) and lighting including extra electrical drops and outlets in the floor. Upgrade the computers with stations. Install a circulation desk with computer designated to complete library only tasks. Install new, non-stripping, low odor flooring that will hold up well. Establish a secondary exit. Install shelves that are both practical and functional (shelves on wheels and the height of the shelves should not exceed five and half feet.)

In closing, Ms. Niles, I wish to thank you for your time and willingness to consider these options for our library. We believe that these changes will inspire our students to pursue their love of learning through the art of reading. Respectfully, Natonya D. Huggins School Librarian 1859 Second Street Elementary School Temple Hills, MD 20744
