- How can you use your research to write an informational writing piece? - How can you utilize criticism and editing to improve a writing piece? Standards: CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.7 Participate in shared research and writing projects (e.g., read a number of books on a single topic to produce a report; record science observations). CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.8 Recall information from experiences or gather information from provided sources to answer a question. CCSS.ELA-Literacy.W.2.2 Write informative/explanatory texts in which they introduce a topic, use facts and definitions to develop points, and provide a concluding statement or section. Learning Goals and Assessments: Lesson Objectives TSWBAT further expand their research based rough draft into a published writing piece. Assessments Each student will use their edited rough draft to create a published writing piece.

Materials: Research guideline worksheet, lined paper to begin publishing informational writing piece, laptops and non-fiction books (if needed) Pre-Assessment/Prior knowledge: The students will have experience in using the steps of the writing process. They will have also gathered relevant information to include in their writing pieces. Lesson Beginning: The students will finish creating their rough draft and conference with a teacher to edit it. Instructional Plan: - Once all rough drafts and conferences are completed, students will begin to publish their writing piece. This involves transferring their rough draft from their writing notebook to a piece of lined paper. - Students will be reminded to use correct punctuation and capital letters in the appropriate places. - Students will raise their hands when publication is complete and the teacher will collect their paper and hand them a sheet of white paper to illustrate a picture of their dinosaur. Differentiation: Students who struggle with writing will be closely monitored and assessed during this research project. ESL students will be guided with excess questions that should be

answered throughout their papers. They will also be asked to write only one paragraph with time permitting. Classroom management: The teachers will continuously check on students to make sure they are on task. Once each student has finished his/her published piece, they will have a short conference with the teacher to make sure it is acceptable and will be given white paper to illustrate their dinosaur. Students who finish early will be asked to complete a dinosaur packet with fun activities. Transition: Students will spend this period publishing their work and illustrating their dinosaur. Closure: Students should have their writing piece published and dinosaur illustrated at the end of this lesson. We will then discuss the plans for the final day of the research project so students know what to expect for the next class.
