Second Focus Group

Using the second focus group, we were able to

find mistakes and errors in the rough edit of the film we showed them, there were things we improved after this, for example the silhouettes voice was not understandable in the rough cut, and there were a few jumps in the sequence.

How does your media product represent particular social groups? As well as the younger
age group we tried to aim -Target social group: Young adults the film at the 25 + year -Target audience: 16-25 year olds olds -Used a young actor, easier for the audience to relate to.because due to the family element of the film it could be relatable for them. We found our target audience by the exits polls During our questionnaires done by the bfi. we found that people like to violence so we put it in the opening sequence. We decided on a stereotypical male character because it would be more relatable to the audience, we also like how it was contrasting against the kidnapping going on inside the house.

What kind of media institution might distribute your media product and why? The type of media institution that would distribute our film is YouTube
This is because it has over 100 million viewers everyday It is worldwide YouTube videos are easily shared with Facebook, twitter and many more also The target market uses social networking It is free The target market are the people who use it the most Most importantly it has now started streaming movies via computer, mobile phone, Xbox, tablet etc. The bfi exits poll showed that 22% of the target market found out about a thriller from YouTube and 45% of the target market go to see films because of their trailers which can be seen on youtube.

Who would be the audience for your media product?

From the research we have done around thrillers we have decided to aim our thriller at the ages between 16 to 25. Between this age range the people attend the cinema more than any other ages as they are more common to go out in their leisure time with friends. This is because they are mainly still in education so they have more time to go to the cinema. Also money is also easier to get hold of in this range as most people still live with their parents and have a part time job.

Our film is very much a traditional English realist film so it attracts an indie audience. This means a wider audience can be targeted of both sexes.

How did you attract/address your audience?

When deciding the props for our target audience (16-25) we wanted them to be able to relate to the audience. For example we included Dr Dre headphones and smartphones such as the IPhone.
This is because between these ages they want the latest technology so they can show off to their peers, so by including products like the IPhone 4GS and the new water proof Sony Xperia Go phone it will create a connection with the audience.

We also tried to attract our target audience by including some special effects. We know ourselves from being between the ages of the target audience that special effects are a good way to keep the viewer on the edge of their seat.
From our focus group we gathered information that our target audience are attracted to a mystery within their film. Therefore we decided to create an enigma in the opening sequence of our film. The mystery is that you do not know who the cold call killer is. This addresses the audience as it will want to make them ask questions.

What have you learnt about technologies from the process of constructing this product?

During the editing of the sequence we have learnt how to do special effects like the car hit, by using a tutorial by Video Co-pilot and we have improved our general editing skill whilst making this project, things like the pacing of sequence has improved. Also we have learnt how to do certain shots (panning shot, hand held shot, etc), as well as techniques we have learnt, like when capturing the audio we now know where to place the mic, e.g. how close, over the camera or under the camera, the audio has improved a lot over the course of creating the opening.

Colour Grading
We colour graded our film to get a more filmic look, colour

grading consists of multiple colour corrections built up, we felt the colours we used made the film more gritty. The shot is slightly blown out but the original shot was to, this is because DSLR cameras do not have enough dynamic range to cope with the light in the that far away.

Looking back at your preliminary task, what do you feel you have learnt in the progression from it to the full product?
Our narrative structuring has improved since the first task we completed, there is more depth to the story and it makes more sense. Creating documents that helped our filming were improved, like the story board, it was important this detailed as it gave us a clear view of what to do and what to aim for when filming, even though the film has changed slightly from the story board it was a very important part of our planning. We made sure the continuity was correct in the new project, and that equipment was placed correctly and out of shot. The thriller opening project was much better organized than the first task.
