Attempt all questions before the relevant Example Class Assume g = 9.81 m/s2; density of water () = 1000 kg/m3 Sea water density () = 1027 kg/m3, Mercury density () = 13600 kg/m3 ,Light oil density () = 800 kg/m3, Glycerine 1260kg/m3. 1. A hole 150mm square is made in the bottom of a ship, 6.4m below the water level. What force must be exerted to keep the sea water out by holding a piece of wood 250mm square against the hole. [1450N] 2. A rectangular tank of length 0.915m by width 0.610m and depth 0.610m contains water to a level of 0.228m below the rim. A body of mass 136kg and of volume 114 litres is put in the water and rests on the bottom of the tank completely submerged. Calculate the thrust on each wall of the tank and on the bottom of the tank. [1542N, 1028N, 3462N] 3. A repair dock is 27.5m long, 6.1m deep, 9.15m wide at the top end and 3.05m wide at the bottom. One long side is vertical and the other in inclined at 45. When the dock is filled to the top with sea water, what is the force on each side and the bottom? [5154103 N, 951103 N, 7289103 N, 5154103 N] 4. A pair of flat rectangular lock gates each 4.88m high by 4.58m wide are kept shut by the hydrostatic force of sea water. The gates are supported by vertical hinges 7.32m apart. What is the resultant reaction on the hinges when the water level is at the top of the gates on one side and 0.915m above the base on the other? [424103 N] 5. A vertical partition is placed across a tank with vertical sides 1.220m apart. The tank contains light oil to a level of 2.130m on one side and glycerine to a level of 0.915m on the other. Find the magnitude and position of the resultant force on the partition. [15450 N, 0.878m above the bottom of the tank]
