Abstract
IntroductionThisstudyexaminedtobaccosmokepollution(alsoknownasthirdhandsmoke,THS)inhotelswithandwithoutcompletesmokingbansand investigatedwhethernonsmokingguestsstayingovernightinthesehotelswereexposedtotobaccosmokepollutants. MethodsAstratifiedrandomsampleofhotelswith(n=10)andwithout(n=30)completesmokingbanswasexamined.Surfacesandairwereanalysedfortobacco smokepollutants(ie,nicotineand3ethynylpyridine,3EP).Nonsmokingconfederateswhostayedovernightinguestroomsprovidedurineandfingerwipe samplestodetermineexposuretonicotineandthetobaccospecificcarcinogen4(methylnitrosamino)1(3pyridyl)1butanoneasmeasuredbytheirmetabolites cotinineand4(methylnitrosamino)1(3pyridyl)1butanol(NNAL),respectively. FindingsComparedwithhotelswithcompletesmokingbans,surfacenicotineandair3EPwereelevatedinnonsmokingandsmokingroomsofhotelsthat allowedsmoking.Airnicotinelevelsinsmokingroomsweresignificantlyhigherthanthoseinnonsmokingroomsofhotelswithandwithoutcompletesmoking bans.Hallwaysurfacesoutsideofsmokingroomsalsoshowedhigherlevelsofnicotinethanthoseoutsideofnonsmokingrooms.Nonsmokingconfederates stayinginhotelswithoutcompletesmokingbansshowedhigherlevelsoffingernicotineandurinecotininethanthosestayinginhotelswithcompletesmoking bans.ConfederatesshowedsignificantelevationsinurinaryNNALafterstayinginthe10mostpollutedrooms. ConclusionsPartialsmokingbansinhotelsdonotprotectnonsmokingguestsfromexposuretotobaccosmokeandtobaccospecificcarcinogens.Non smokersareadvisedtostayinhotelswithcompletesmokingbans.Existingpoliciesexemptinghotelsfromcompletesmokingbansareineffective.
