the second survey, I discovered that I had increased my effectiveness as a classroom manager by 7%. Although this was much lower than my goal of 25%, I still feel the results are positive. My effectiveness was increased in all areas of the control survey except for one. For the statement, Student behavior in this class makes the teacher angry, 37% of students disagreed in the fall, whereas only 24% disagreed in the spring. However, the second set of questions, which referred to specific changes I had made after the first survey, resulted in much more positive responses. For example, compared to the beginning of the year: 59% of the class believes the class behavior is better 35% believe their teacher is less frustrated with the class behavior According to the data, the following strategies were effective: Visual Exit Directions: In response to the statement, when my teacher draws pictures of what Im supposed to do 86% of students responded, it helps me understand what Im supposed to do. Above-Pause-Whisper: In response to the statement, when my teacher counts down from 10 (which is done using this strategy), students in this class, 59% of students said, sit down and listen to her quietly. I also feel that the freeze body and raise hand vs. speak out methods were effective given that their implementation coincided with the more positive results of the second survey.

Moving forward: As I go into my second year as a 6th grade teacher at Seward Montessori, I will take what I have learned to begin my year the way I have ended this year: with a classroom that is under control to the best of my ability in a space where students and teacher are respected and respectful.
