David Douglas School District Mission Statement
It is the mission of the comprehensive guidance program and counseling program of David Douglas Schools to support the education and development of all students. This is a collaborative and developmental model involving the efforts of school staff, students, parents, and the greater community and is both proactive and preventative. This will enable students to make self-directed and resposible decisions and positive contributions to his or her community. Fir Ridge Counseling Philosophy

The school counselors of Fir Ridge Campus believe: Meeting with all students regularly ensures personal and academic planning and success. Connecting with parents and guardians promotes students succeed. Assisting students in getting his or her basic needs met, prepares students to engage in the classroom. Connecting students to resources supports his or her development as students leave our school and enter the community. Building positive relationships between our students and the community facilitates our students positive contribution to society/community. We believe the School Counseling Program should:
Be planned and coordinated by state-certified school counselors in consultation with other representatives of the school and community. Engage students in classroom, group and/or individual activities to enhance student learning. Provide academic, career, personal/social, and community development for every student. Use data to drive the program development and evaluation, and actively monitor student results. We believe all Fir Ridge counselors should:
Adhere to the American School Counselor Association Ethical Standards for School Counselors and the standards set forth by the State of Oregon Teacher Standards and Practices Commission.

Catherine Nyhan, LPC, LSC Fir Ridge Campus Professional Disclosure Statement The purpose of this statement is to provide students and parents with information about the counseling services I offer here at Fir Ridge Campus, as well as professional background information about myself. Should you have any questions regarding this material feel free to contact me at any time. Philosophy and Approach: My goal as a school counselor is to promote the academic, personal/social and career growth of the students I service. Areas often dealt with in an individual setting are: adjustment difficulties due to loss or change, communication skills, self-esteem building, and developmental issues. In a group or classroom setting, I assist students in career planning, interest and abilities testing related to career choices, scheduling, graduation credit checks, issues related to college options and selection, and scholarship opportunities. I do not charge a counseling fee as I receive a salary from David Douglas Schools. Education/Work Experience: I received a Master of Arts degree in Counseling from Portland State University in 2009. I received my Bachelor of Science degree in Secondary Education with a major in English and a minor in Psychology from Cumberland College in Williamsburg, Kentucky in 2000. For the past ten years I have been deeply involved in public education. I have been an English teacher in both Kentucky and Oregon, and have worked with the David Douglas School District for the past eight years; first as a teacher from 2004-2009 and as a counselor from 2010 to the present. FRC Culture
Fir Ridge Campus is located in southeast Portland, Oregon and services 213* Portland youth. The culture of the FRC is reflective of the diverse elements of the neighborhood. We take pride in our multicultural awareness and strive to provide services to all our students. The following graphs represent the demographic makeup of Fir Ridge Campus student population.

Forty percent of our students identify as Caucasian, 38% are Hispanic/Latino, 8% are Black/African-American, 7% identify as multiple ethnicities, 4% are Native Hawaiian, 2% are Asian, and 1% are American Indian. FRC offers alternative services to families and students who need additional support. The graphs on the next few pages reflect the special populations Fir Ridge serves. Twenty-two percent of our student body is currently receiving Free or Reduced lunch; 9% of our students are English language learners; 14% of our students have Limited English Proficiency; 20% receive Special Education Services; 4% are Talented and Gifted; and 16% are identified as Title X.

FRC MANAGEMENT
Rationale
Fir Ridge Campuss Comprehensive Guidance Program strives to improve attendance, increase parental/family involvement and connection to the school community, improve test scores, and increase the feeling of safety for students in our school and residents in our local community. Our school counseling department is a vital component to each students educational program. The Comprehensive Guidance Program is developmentally based and contains sequential and concurrent activities that are organized and implemented by Oregon state licensed school counselors, teachers, and school staff and administrators. In addition, the program works in collaboration with students, parents/guardians, and members of the local community. Our delivery system includes: 1. A developmentally based guidance curriculum that includes academic, career and personal/social standards with clear objectives to be attained by all students, and activities that help students achieve these competencies. 2. Individual planning with students and their families in the areas of personal/social, academic and career development. 3. Responsive services of counseling, consultation, and referral 4. System support that involves management, consultation, community outreach and public relations that promote the effective delivery of the school guidance program. Fir Ridge Campuss Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Program is based on Oregon Administrative Rules 581-022-1510 and 581-0220405, which require that the district and school assist students to: (A)Understand and utilize the educational opportunities available to them; (B)Meet academic standards; (C)Establish tentative career and educational goals; (D) Create and maintain an educational plan and portfolio; (E)Demonstrate the ability to utilize personal qualities, education, and training in the world of work; (F) Develop decision making skills; (G) Obtain information about self; (H) Accept increasing responsibility for own actions, including the development of self advocacy skills;

Skills for life learning, career self-management, and social interaction are emphasized. Each educational program advocates for the individual student and his or her future through career exploration and planning, which broadens knowledge of our changing world. our academic mission. The school counseling program includes a structure with specific content and clarifies types of activities to include in a school counselors job description. The school counselors roles are defined to activities that enhance the learning and development of each student. A portion of the program is evaluated annually using the ASCA Counseling Program Audit to ensure the program is meeting standards and objectives recommended by ASCA. Benefits for the Community Our program provides an increased opportunity for collaboration and participation of community members with the school program by educating the community of the needs of the school and by educating the school of the needs of the community. The program enhances economic development through quality preparation of students for the work world. Lastly, the program creates community awareness and visibility of the student support systems required for student success. Benefits for Business and Industry Our program provides future workers with decision-making, preemployment skills, maturity, and career self-management skills through collaboration among counselors, business, industry, and communities. In addition, the program increases opportunities for business and industry to participate actively in the total school program.

DELIVERY SYSTEM
Delivery System Summary
Our Comprehensive Guidance and Counseling Plan will be delivered through a variety of components: the school guidance curriculum, individual/small group student planning, responsive services and system support. Guidance Curriculum School counselors will consult and team with teachers in order to deliver the guidance curriculum. This happens during advisory, student led conferences, new student orientation, Senior Exit classes, F.A.S.T. , summer school, counseling support in classes like Visual Art and Writing, and involving community partners. Individual/Small Group Student Planning Individual planning includes meeting one on one with students to review academic progress and requirements, transcript review, and course planning. Counselors provide information and facilitate opportunities around college funding option, career readiness, and post-graduation planning. Professional school counselors are trained to provide counseling support around ongoing personal issues. School counselors make referrals for 504s, IEP Planning, behavior plans, FBAs, suicide screening, Title X referrals. At Fir Ridge counselors are actively involved in early intervention and identification of anger management problems, social and anxiety issues, and develop creative solutions for students to be successful in school. Responsive Services A portion the counseling day is reserved for unplanned student needs that arise around students experiencing extreme emotional discomfort. Some of these concerns include, academic concerns, family crisis, peer relationships drug and alcohol issues, depression and anxiety, divorce, domestic violence, gang involvement, and legal issues. Fir Ridge offers conflict resolution to students who wish to arise problems with peers or with staff members. The counseling department also works closely with mentoring services, the Juvenile Justice System, Department of Human Services and other outside agencies. System Support System support will involve the school counselors facilitating professional development, staff training, consultation, and teaming with school staff in order to support the academic, career, and personal/social development of our students.
