Introduction
The purpose of this assignment is to help students to become more familiar with the ArcMap and ArcCatalog computer programs. In the text students are provided with a series of tutorials that will guide them while they are answering the questions to the following assignment.

Chapter 3
a. The type of feature that the cities layer contains is a point.

b. Earhart and Noonan arrived in Karachi 6/15/1937. c. Karachi was in the country of British India, which is now known as Pakistan. d. The procedure to make the city labels available when the scale is larger than a given ratio is to left click the layer that you wish to have labeled. Then click properties. In the layer properties menu click the tab labels. On this screen click scale range. From here you have the option to adjust the minimum and maximum scale that the labels will be viewed at. e. The type of the feature contained in the Flight Path layer is a line.

f. The amount of records contained in the table Attributes of Cities Earhart Visited is twentyeight. g. The total (known) distance that Earhart flew was 35597.615. e. You could determine the mean precipitation for the cities visited in just Africa using ArcMap by left clicking the Cities Earhart Visited and selecting Open Attribute table. Once the table is open click the first city in Africa on the left grey button (Saint Louis), then SHIFT click the last city in Africa, Assab, on the left grey button. All of the cities in Africa should be highlighted. Now left click the column heading Precipitation and select Statistics. Under the Statistics: box you will find the mean along with count, minimum, maximum, sum and standard deviation.

Chapter 4
a. The type of file (the type of data) that the World.mdb file is, is a personal geodatabase.\

b. The countries component of World.mbd is generically known as a personal geodatabase feature class.

c. The type of file (the type of data) that the file flight_path.shp is, is a shapefile.

d. The type of file (the type of data) that the file ex04c.mxd is, is an Arc map document. e. The coordinate system used for the countries personal geodatabases is the Geographic Coordinate Systems: GCS_WGS_1984. f. The sorts of AutoCAD file types ArcCatalog recognizes are dgn files. g. The range of cell (raster) values in the file seafloor.tif show depth, they are High: 0 Low:9886. h. The units that these values are representative of are meters. i. If you attempted to add data in ArcMap and ArcCatalog of a projection different from that of the data you had been working with I believe the projection would change to be that of the first file that had been opened.

Chapter 5
a. At a scale of 1:1,000,000 I feel that a point would be the most appropriate symbol to represent the Niagara College Glendale Campus. I feel this way because with a small scale map the line and polygon symbol would only show up as a point on the map anyways. A point is ideal because it is easily visible on a small scale map. b. At a scale of 1:200 I feel that a polygon would be the most appropriate symbol to represent the Niagara College Glendale Campus. I feel this way because with a large scale map a line would be used to show a feature that is only in a straight line and a point would indicate that the feature is relative to that size and shape when it is not. A polygon is ideal because it shows the map reader the exact physical qualities of the feature. c. As the health departments Gis Consultant, my first thought would be to make this map extremely readable for everyone who will encounter it. I feel like colours and large symbols usually help keep peoples attention. I would go about organizing the data on the excel sheet by showing them directly on the map. Each bird specie would have its own unique symbol shown in a legend. Where there were found is where they would be shown directly on the map. Then to show if the West Nile results were positive or negative I would use two different colours to display this information.

d. As the Colleges GIS consultant on this project I would want to take full advantage of the supplies that are already preexisting. The great thing about the Arc programs is that that can have different files brought in from other programs. The map photo and the CAD file can both be opened together in Arc. The map would have to be opened first so that the Cad file could take the same coordinates when it is placed in top. Having the ability to see this all laid out would help me to make a much more educated decision. e. By looking at the maps it is easy to see that they were created in a much earlier time period. With todays technological advances a lot of work could be done to improve on this original pieces of work. A large improvement could be the use of colour. Because the map is about waterways, colour would be a great way to make the water stand out amongst the background. Another tool that would be useful is a measurement system so that the maps can be set to scale. Finally the last tool I would be sure to add is the title tool. This would make the titles a lot more clear, and sure that they do not overlap.
