Visiting Madeira Island
Once in Madeira, the
best thing you can do is
to look around and
glimpse the landscape.
Enjoy all of it’s green and
lively plants, trees and
colourful flowers.
Houses of Santana, “As Casas de Santana”
The first thing to visit no
doubt would be the Capi-
tal, Funchal. Notice the
fresh-painted buildings,
built with dark rock, typi-
cal all over the island.
Funchal is green, and has
many gardens free to
visit, where any tourist
can enter and enjoy the
view.
A curious but obvious
thing to say is that the
city was established in the
plainest area of the is-
land, the best place to
build a capital.
Next place to visit in Ma-
deira is Porto Santo. I did-
n’t had time but, what
folks say is that Porto
Santo is to Madeira what
Costa da Caparica is the
Continental Portugal. It
has a huge beach which in
Summer is a great beach
tourist site.
The main city is well de-
veloped. It has a lot of
new built buildings, many
shopping centers, what
one wouldn’t expect in
such a small piece of land.
One famous thing about
Madeira is Santana, and
the Houses of Santana,
which are very typical and
worldwide known. Small
houses, usually with straw
“ Parque Florestal das Queimadas”
made roofs that touch the
ground.
Back in Funchal, one can
visit the market.

The Market, “ O Mercado dos Lavradores”
Colourful and lively
vegetables and fruits can
be seen. Flowers are also
commercialized in the
market, with thousands of
shapes and colours one
even weirder than the
other.
The island as sea all
around it but, no site was
available to mother nature
to create a beach, for
there is no decent beach
in the main island only in
Porto Santo.
The rock’s dark and the
blackest I’ve ever seen.
The weather’s grey and
quite variable. Madeira
has a tropical weather, so
one moment it makes a
shiny Sun and the next
it’s raining the rest of the
day. It’s one of the rea-
sons that makes the is-
land so green and flow-
ered.
