Professional Portfolio Artifact(s) Reflections Cover Sheet PLO: Apply Effective guidance and interaction strategies that support

all children's social learning identity and self-confidence. The Artifacts I have included to demonstrate my competence in PLO3 include: Guidance Scenarios (CHDV 110, revised CHDV 210) Photo Journal for Social/Emotional Support Strategies (Created in CHDV 210) I. Explanation: How is the content of these artifacts used to demonstrate my competence in this PLO and what specific knowledge, skills, or belief systems are demonstrated?

Guidance Scenarios: Knowledge- I gained a lot of knowledge doing the guidance scenarios. I gained knowledge in the R & R statements, conflict resolution. I also gained knowledge in redirecting children. I learned that it is more important to acknowledge the positive things a child does than to point out the negative. With the guidance scenarios I learned that it is important to listen to children when they explain a problem. I learned it is important to give eye contact and get down to eye level when redirecting a child or when negotiating conflict.

Skills- The guidance scenarios have gave me the skill to respect each child as an individual and to resolve conflicts. I have the skill to use the I message effectively, and I have the skill to effectively use the R&R statements. I gained the skills to effectively handle conflict.

Beliefs: I believe guidance strategies are important because they show children that there are more options to conflict resolution than fighting. I believe children need to learn ways to cope with conflict.

Photo Journal for Social/Emotional Support Strategies: Knowledge-The knowledge I gained from doing a photo journal is that it is important to have pictures with meaning to them. I gained knowledge to choose five pictures and add an anecdotal note to the picture to match it to a guideline. I also gained knowledge in arranging a appealing photo journal with notes to match the pictures. Skills- I have gained skills to add appropriate pictures to each set of notes I have. I have also gained the skill to put pictures on a word document with notes in them. I also have the skill to choose a certain picture that I need as a reference. Beliefs- I believe it is important to keep a photo journal because it serves as proof of activities children do and the teacher can use them to help scaffold. II. Growth: How do these artifacts demonstrate my growth in knowledge

and skill? Guidance Scenarios: Knowledge- My knowledge in guidance scenarios has improved in that I now understand how to properly use the tools I learned in child development 110. I used to believe that the I messages fixed everything. I used to believe that if I used the I message the children would do what I was asking them to do. Now I know that is not true. I now understand the I message is giving the child a direct message. I have also improved in my knowledge because I now know that giving children choices is important, I now know that children are capable of problem solving on their own and I do not need to problem solve everything for them. Skills- I have gained many skills, I can now use different guidance strategies instead of the same strategy every time. I have shown my growth in my mentor site. I am now able to help children resolve their problems. For example, two children were playing with play dough, another child wanted to play also, and told me I want to play to I said to him, did you ask them if you could have some play dough? He looked at the other two children and said, can I play? the two children said okay and cut their play dough in half so they could have the same amount. I did not have to tell the other children to share the play dough. I was able to direct him to solve the problem on his own. I also have the skill to problem solve sharing. In my mentor site I had

the skill to redirect the children to ask each other, can I have a turn when you are done? This gives one child to feel in control and it helps the other child feel content that s/he will have a turn. Now I have the skill to be confident and problem solve according to the situation. Beliefs: I believe it is important to use proper redirection. I think there are many ways to handle different situations and I believe that an educator needs to use all those tools and resources. Photo Journal for Social/Emotional Support Strategies: Knowledge- my knowledge has grown because I now understand that a photo journal is not kept because it is pretty and fun to look at. It is helpful to the teacher to help evaluate him/herself. My knowledge has also grown because I now know it is a way to keep track of childrens development. It is a tool to refer back when doing DRDPs. Skills- My skills have improved in that I can now look at what areas a child needs to improve in and take pictures of a child doing those activities to compare the growth trough the year. I have also improved my skills by adding different backgrounds, and different ways of decoration to the journal. Another skill I have gained from this assignment is that I can now look at a picture and write an anecdotal note and know in which way the child is being supported, socially or emotionally by the environment, for future references. Beliefs- I still believe a photo journal is important to have to critique

the environment and how it is helping the child socially and emotionally. I believe it is a useful tool to have because it serves as a critique to the teacher in the environment s/he is setting. III. Application: How am I going to build on the knowledge and skills that are demonstrated (In other words, what are your next steps?) and how will the knowledge, skills, or belief systems be integrated into my future teaching practice. Guidance Scenarios:
In the future I am going to continue to use different guidance tools in order to find what works for certain situations. I will also continue to do research to stay up to date with different guidance strategies. I will continue to do research to find different ways to guide different types of children, such as children with special needs. Photo Journal for Social/Emotional Support Strategies

In the future I will continue having photo journals of the children in my classroom. I will keep them as documentation of their social and emotional development with peers and with adults. I will have them set up nice and aesthetically and show them to parents during parent meetings.
