EXPLORE

May 2013
This could be YOU!!!

Broaden your horizons this term by carrying out your own expedition!!!

WHAT IS EXPLORATION?
It can be many things to many people but one thing in common is the quest to learn something new. This could be new land, a new species, your physical limits but basically any body can be an explorer.

Task: To carry out your own journey of exploration in Hong Kong or further aeld if possible. It should be to a place that you have never visited before, or it can be to a place you know but by a dierent route or form of transport. You will plan your exploration on your own although more than one person can go with you. You can bring your parents along but remember...you are the leader of the expedition!

Hong Kong Island Sometimes it really does look like this

[1]

GETTING STARTED When you started thinking about your exploration what were your initial ideas? Which of your ideas have you decided to go for? Explain your reasons for choosing this exploration. PLANNING YOUR EXPLORATION (APPLYING) You can choose how to show your ideas but you must think about the following: When you are going, transportation, costing, things to take and what you will do when you get there. RECORDING YOUR EXPLORATION All good explorers keep a record of their journey so that they can prove that they have done it and also to record their thoughts and feelings at each stage of the process. You are going to produce a digital journal of your exploration and this will form the basis of the assessment for this task. What should a digital journal include? Think of the following as your tick list: A map kit list: what you wore, brought with you and why Photos or video of your journey A minimum of three entries: One from the planning stage (what diculties are you facing in planning this exploration? Costs? Who is going with you? What challenges do you predict?) One completed on your day of exploration (Were you successful? What was the weather like? .) One completed a few days later where you reect upon the experience (try using the thinking hats. What went well? What would you change next time? How did your journey have an impact on people and places?)

PLANNING SHEET

FURTHER INFORMATION

Why do I want to go to this place/do this journey?

I want to go to Nan Lian Garden because it is a very unique place with lots of Chinese traditional architectures. Ive also never been to this place and I wish to gain new and interesting knowledge after going to Nan Lian Garden.

What do I need to do this exploration?

First of all, I would need to find information about the Garden, (opening hours) and decide on a person that Im going to take on my expedition. I will also have to bring my camera in order to take evidences that I have been to certain places in the park and take videos for my blog on my website and make a schedule for the day.

How much will it cost?

Im taking the shuttle bus to Nan Lian Garden, which means it will be free, the entrance to Nan Lian Garden is also free, but for lunch I think it will cost around HKD $200 if we are eating in Nan Lian Garden and it will cost around HKD $150 if we eat in nearby restaurants. The bus fare is HKD $7.4 for each person which means two person will cost HKD $14.8.

How will I get there?

I will get there by taking the shuttle bus which is at 10:00am and then from Plaza Hollywood, I will walk to the entrance of Nan Lian Garden.

When and What are we eating for lunch?

For lunch, I will be eating in the restaurant in Nan Lian Garden but Ive heard that the restaurant isnt going to be opened so if it isnt opened then Ill eat in a restaurant in Plaza Hollywood. We will be eating around 12:00pm when we have finished exploring Nan Lian Garden. In Nan Lian Garden, I will firstly take a picture with the entrance sign and then I will find the golden temple with orange bridge and take a picture with that. Then I will find the waterfall and take a picture too. My challenges is to find the route to these places and take pictures in these places as evidence that Ive been there.

EXPLORATION IMPACT ASSESSMENT

Positive On Myself After going to Nan Lian Garden, there were many positive impacts on myself. Firstly, I learnt a lot about traditional Chinese Architecture which made me think deeply about the wonderful culture that I have. Secondly, not only i learnt new knowledge, I saw many different species of beautiful trees and plants that were shaped in complex shapes. I also think that it gave me a chance to relax during this exploration because of the relaxing music and peaceful environment in the Garden. Other positive impacts that Finally, I think the last positive impact that occurred to me is that I had a chance to lead someone who is older than me, someone who has much more experience than me and I was able to lead them throughout the whole exploration smoothly. In this expedition, I think I made positive impact on the environment by not damaging the plants in the Garden and also buying souvenirs which donates my money to the park and where they can buy more plants and have a better, cleaner environment Garden. Positive Impacts about the environment was that I was able to learn a lot of interesting plants and trees that Ive never seen before. The environment in the park really gave me more knowledge on how a place with lots of plants and trees could be so beautiful and relaxing. The environment of the Garden also gave me a chance to relax my mind and release my stress. During my expedition, I learnt a lot of names of plants that Ive never seen before. In this expedition, the positive impacts on others such as my auntie (Auntie Ling) were able to rely on me and without worrying about the schedule of the day. I was also able to help her with any needs and she was enjoying the whole trip.

Negative Overall, I dont think there were a lots of negative impacts because I really enjoy my time spending in Nan Lian Garden. However, mosquito bites could be one of the negative impacts, the fact that the restaurant in the Garden was also closed which made me had to change my plan and eat in another restaurant which was outside of the Garden.

On the environment

In this exploration, the impacts that I made on this environment were that the shuttle bus and the public bus caused air pollution to the environment.

On others

There were lots of mosquitoes that bit the people in the Garden.
