NOA A W eather Radio (NW R) is a service of the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s National
W eather Service (NW S). As the “Voice of the National Weather Service”, it provides continuous broadcasts of the
latest weather information directly from NW S offices. Information available includes local weather forecasts and
conditions, hourly tempe ratures, and m ost imp ortant, severe weather watches and warnings. NW R transmitters
typically cover counties within a 40 mile radius around the transmitter. Reception will vary with the terrain. In some
cases, an outside antenna m ay be needed for goo d reception.
Special radios, multi-band radios, or scanners are needed to receive the broadcast. Frequencies used across the
United States range from 162 .400 to 16 2.55 0 M HZ . Som e rece ivers have a “tone-alarm” fea ture that automatically
turns on the unit whenever certain watches or warnings are received from the NW S A new generation of weather
radio receivers now on the market uses the NW S developed technology called Specific Area Message Encoding
(SAME). SA M E equip ped weathe r radio s allow the user to program their rad io to alert for watches o r warnings only
for their sp ecific co unties of interest. T his allows the user to screen out severe weathe r alarms for other areas.
