Roman Emperors of the Julian-Claudian Dynasty

The Julian-Claudian Dynasty was the first dynasty in the Roman Empire which lasted from 27 BC to 68 AD with 5 emperors. Most emperors in this dynasty were not very good for the empire like Nero. But there were some great emperors such as Augustus, he achieved great accomplishments such as expanding the Roman Empire and ending about 100 years of civil war, and gave the roman people more than 40 years of peace and prosperity. Did you know that the Roman Empire lasted 503 years with a total of 14 dynasties? Augustus Caesar Augustus Caesar was the first Roman Emperor, also known as The first Roman Emperor. Augustus was born in September 23rd, 63 BC and died in August 19th, 14 AD at the age of 76. The first Roman Emperor was famous for controlling Rome during the age Jesus was alive and for building roads all over the Roman Empire. Augustus was married 3 times with Clodia Pulchra, Scribonia, and Livia Drusila. Augustus hugely expanded the empire by ruling Spain, Egypt, Germany, and most of Central Europe. When he died the Senate declared Augustus a god, but before his passing two of his grandsons died, and made his last grandson the next emperor. Tiberius Tiberius was the second Roman Emperor also known as the The Emperor who trusted

Sejanus and lived in Capri. Tiberius was born in November 16, 42 BC and died in March 16, 37AD at the age of 78. He was famous for giving a speech at his fathers funeral when he was a kid. Augustus was Tiberiuss stepfather and sent him to many missions for the government to know more of what was going on in the Roman government. During the missions he went with his brother to fight the Germans that were in Northern Italy. After getting married twice with Vipsania Agrippina and Julia the Elder he moved to an island named Capri. Augustus was worried he had no one to be the next emperor when Tiberius left. Tiberius was later forced by the Senate to be the emperor when Augusts died at an old age. During the late years he ruled, he left most of the work to Sejanus one of the head of the palace guards. But when Sejanus killed Tiberiuss son, Tiberius killed Sejanus. Then Tiberius only had one heir left since Sejanus exceled Tiberiuss two elder sons. The name of his heir was Caligula. Caligula Caligula was the third Roman Emperor also known as The Evil Emperor who proclaimed himself a god. He was born in August 31st, 12 AD and died in January 24th, 41 AD at the age of 29. Hes famous for calling himself a god. When he was young he lived in a military area because hes father was a general for the Roman military. During hes years of being the emperor he once got sick and became very odd. He was dressing up as Bacchus, Venus, or Apollo (Roman Gods) calling himself a God. One time when he was in Gaul about to move to Britain and invade, he got his soldiers to gather 2

seashells. When he came back from Gaul he wanted a statue in the Temple of Jerusalem to call himself a god. Later he was killed by one his advisers. The adviser did not only kill Caligula but also his wife and daughter. Then appeared Caligulas uncle to succeed him. Claudius Claudius was the fourth Roman Emperor also known as The bumbling Emperor who married the infamous Messalina. Claudius was born in August 1st, 10 BC and died in October 13th, 54 AD at the age of 64. Claudius was a weak emperor because of his health problems. He was married 4 times to Plautia Urgulanilla, Aelia Paetina, Messalina, and Agrippina the Younger. Claudius did very great things like protecting the slaves from becoming sick, enlarged citizenship, and women privileges. A big accomplishment of Claudius was invading Britain. Then he was killed by a poisoner that his last wife hired who put poisonous mushrooms in his food. After his death, his son Nero, the son of Aggrippina was declared the next emperor. Nero Nero was the last Roman Emperor of the Julian-Cluadian Dynasty also known as The mad tyrant who blamed the Christians for the burning of Rome. Nero was born in December 15th, 37 AD and died in June 9th, 68 Ad at the age of 30. He was famous for the Burning Rome and blaming it on the Christians. Nero was probably one of the worst emperors of the Julian-Cluadian Dynasty for committing crimes. Nero had

done some good stuff and a lot of bad stuff. One of the only good stuff was when he reduced taxes and banned capital punishment. Nero did bad stuff like wandering in the streets to kill innocent people without reason. But his biggest crime was the Great Fire of Rome, which lasted six days and seven nights destroying many districts, houses, shops, and temples. No one knew who did this until there was a rumor that Nero didnt care and was just singing in his palace. Then the Senate declared the people of Rome a public enemy to Nero. Whoever killed the emperor wouldnt be punished. When Nero heard the news, he escaped with a few slaves and left the empire and committed suicide. After Nero died there was no family of his and the empire was in danger. That was when the Julian-Claudian Dynasty ended. The Senate The Senate is the government and the people of Rome. The Senate is composed of 2 Consuls, 300 members of the Senate, and the Assembly which are all the plebeians (lower class people). The Consuls are the head of the Senate who controlled the army and advised the emperor. The Consuls are patricians elected by the Assembly and the Patricians (300 members of the Senate) to serve for only one year for Rome. The Senate is the rich families in Rome chosen by the Consul to advise the Consul. The Senate had the power to control the money Rome spent and made the laws. The Assembly is all of the people of Rome that are not wealthy.

The only power they had was to suggest the Senate for laws, although the Senate could decline their laws. The Assembly also had the power to vote for the 2 Consuls and vote for war, even though the Senate could decline their votes of war. Influence in Modern Day The Roman Emperors have influenced modern day by many ways, like the name of the month August comes from the name of the Roman Emperor Augustus. The Roman Empire has influenced other countries to become an empire like Russia, Japan, Britain, etc. Roman emperors had their faces in coins and statues like most modern leaders do. The Senate made a big influence on modern day. Many countries in modern day have senates like the U.S, Mexico, Canada, Brazil, etc. The U.S Senate and the Roman Senate (SPQR) are very similar. The U.S Senate has 100 members with 53 Democrats and 42 Republicans and 2 Caucus Democrats. Instead of having two Consuls elected each year the U.S has a president for the Senate. The current president of the Senate of the U.S is Joe Biden (Vice President of the U.S). Ancient Rome has given our modern day many influences such as politics, art, architecture, engineering, mythology, etc. Many archaeologists around the world searched for information about the Ancient Roman life. Many of the Ancient Roman influences made a great impact today. All of the Roman Emperors of the Roman Julian-Claudian Dynasty mustve had many family problems with their wives. Every emperor in this Dynasty has at least married twice. In overall the most successful emperor in this dynasty was Augustus and the worst Nero. Augustus was the only emperor to achieve the most like making larger the area of Rome and ending civil

wars. Nero is the worst for ending the Julian-Claudian dynasty but also for the Burning of Rome which killed mustve hundreds of people.
