Dealing with gender stereotyping and sexism is an additional hurdle for female candidates. Women many times just get media coverage on their appearance. Quote from page 72. Lawless article. (First Paragraph) We also often fail to acknowledge that, as a nation, we are not ready to discuss why sexism still exists. (Lawless 73) White males do not have to justify their votes, women are pressured to vote for other women. women who choose to endorse Barack Obama had to ght allegations of 'betrayal' (Lawless 73). Sexism in Sports

Sports have been separated among men and women since the beginning. And there are 3 main reasons that they continue to be separated: Sex, Size and Money. And things wont change even of they could, and it all has to do with sexism and prejudice. Men are seen to be able to handle more grueling tasks and scenarios compared to women when it comes to physical capability. During the Olympics women get marked up and down depending on what they look like and how they dress. Men do not.

Sexism in Sports - Examples

Tennis: Men 5 set matches Women 3 set matches Olympic Diving: Men 6 dives Women 5 dives Figure Skating: Men longer routines Women Shorter routines 100 Meter Hurdles: Men have an extra 10 meters from the starting line to the hurdles. Basketball: 3-point line distance: Men 22 ft Women 20.52 ft The list goes on and on. Studies also show that people in general just prefer to watch male sports, both men and women alike. And as long as more people watch male sports, the more sponsorships and advertisers and money in general will be focused in that direction. Do you believe that this separation is a good idea? Or that men and women should be held to the same standards when it comes to sports?

Gender Roles

This determines how people SHOULD act. SHOULD dress. SHOULD feel, etc. Are there any ways anyone feels like they act against a specied gender role? Even though media affects gender roles, parents have been proven to have the most inuence on how one chooses to follow gender roles in society. These children receive parental approval when they conform to their gender roles. When girls are taught to cook. When boys are taught to x things, etc. Are gender roles good? bad? do they merely exist?

Video #4 -Gender Stereotypes

Traditionally, the female stereotypic role is to marry and have children. She is also to put her family's welfare before her own; be loving, compassionate, caring, nurturing, and sympathetic; and nd time to be sexy and feel beautiful. The male stereotypic role is to be the nancial provider. He is also to be assertive, competitive, independent, courageous, and career-focused; hold his emotions in check; and always initiate sex. These sorts of stereotypes can prove harmful; they can stie individual expression and creativity, as well as hinder personal and professional growth. Sexism in Advertisements

Our modern society is truly media driven and advertisements and other forms of media are playing a larger and larger role in shaping peoples views on different subjects. Why does sex sell? Why does sexism attract more attention to ads? This is likely because males are the center of the advertising community, and our society has become so sexist that women are even ignored as being the audience of the advertising.
