Jordan Akouka Straton Work of Art 22 April 2013 Community Based Learning Project Reection

with KarenThe plans for my Community Based Learning Project have

drastically changed since my last assignment. I have contacted a few programs including, Kids at Home in the Wild!, a group that would allow me to facilitate outdoor activities for youth in low-income housing, and the Sexual Assault Resource Center, where I would be taking part in their support line. I have recently had to help a loved one deal with all of the physical and psychological affects of sexual affect so this form of help deeply resonated with me. Unfortunately Kids at Home in the Wild! would not be able to accommodate my erratic school hours and the Sexual Assault Resource Center required volunteers to be age 20 or older.
I am expecting my summer schedule to be very busy so I would not be able to

work with a large group that has to keep track of many members. I recently decided to join Karen Trusty. Because she was a civil rights activist during the civil rights movement she is a valuable source of information, especially for us who are living in a time in which there are no movements as prominent as the one she has participated in. It took awhile to gure out everyones schedule in the group so we have our rst

meeting with Karen this weekend. The students I will be working with on this project include Catherine, Keenan, Britney, Alexandria, and Haley. The possibility of designing a DVD jacket and label for the lm on Karen or creating a web site was discussed earlier.
I am a graphic design major so I feel like I can contribute a lot for this portion

of the project. I have limited knowledge of HTML code and would denitely have to teach myself more to get to the level in which I would be able to create and maintain a website. I would denitely have to learn more about the time period to accurately create a design that reects what must be communicated to the viewer. Karen Trusty will be a huge resource for that. In addition to building my knowledge and experience with the ideas of civil rights and oppressed groups in which I am not a part of, I will also be building the skills necessary to to support my major as a graphic designer. I will denitely be reading The New Jim Crow that Karen suggested that we read as part of this project. I am eager to see what other ideas Karen has to throw around when we meet with her this weekend. We have been learning about oppressed groups this year and working with Karen directly relates to that. She will supply us with supplemental knowledge on the subject and hopefully more experience working with people that are part of this oppressed group. The visual arts element of this project may even be something that I could put in my portfolio as I move forward in my Fine Arts degree.
