It is recommended that SWK 255 be taken first, or concurrently with another SWK course. SWK 255 Introduction to Social Work (3 cr) This course is an introduction to the profession of social work and to the history of social welfare. Through an examination of the historical and currently US social welfare system, students will gain an understanding of the development and the mission of the profession of social work. Prerequisite: none; Offered both fall and spring term. SWK 302 Human Behavior and the Social Environment 1 (3 cr) OR SWK 302 Human Behavior and the Social Environment II (3 cr) This course provides systems, ecological and macro perspectives to the reciprocal relationships between individuals and their environments throughout the life cycle. Social Work 302 covers biological, psychological, and social and environmental aspects of the lifespan from conception through young adulthood, and Social Work 303 covers the lifespan from young adulthood through old age. Prerequisite: none; 302 is offered fall term 303 is offered spring term. SWK309 Social Research Methods 1 (3 cr) Social Research Methods is the first of a two-term course in the science of discovery. The Research 1 course introduces students to basic research concepts and methodologies. It considers the application of scientific methods to knowledge development of both social work and social sciences. It also examines the evaluation of practice by the social work practitioner with an emphasis on the relationship with the research process, including problem identification formulation, sampling, research design and measurement. Prerequisite: MAT 201OR PSY 203; Offered fall term. *Psychology Majors who have completed the research sequence through Psychology and CCJ majors who have completed the research course through CCJ may substitute that course for SWK 309. SWK 311 Social Welfare Policy 1 (3 cr) This is the first of a two-term sequence. The purpose of this course is to help students understand what drives social welfare policy, how it impacts our lives, how we can change it, and how we can advocate for clients. Prerequisite: none; Offered fall term. SWK 314 Social Work Ethics (3 cr) This course provides a concentrated study and understanding of social work values and ethics on the micro and macro levels, and their application to direct practice, social policy formulation/application and organizational policies and procedures. Emphasis will be placed on the NASW Code of Ethics. Prerequisite: none; Offered fall term. At least two electives are offered each term. They may include: Spirituality and Social Work Health and Aging Family & Children Substance Abuse At-risk Populations
