Hello Parents/Guardians, and Students!!

Welcome back to a new and exciting school year! My name is Miss Mroz, I will be your childs 5th grade school teacher this year. I am a recent college graduate from Grand Valley State University with high academics and a passion for teaching students how to make healthy life choices in all aspects of their lives. It is a great privilege to be able to work as a part of the Lemon Bay Middle School Staff. I am eager to teach health this year and get to know all of my students and their parents/guardians as the year progresses. Throughout this school year I plan on following the Michigan state issued standards for health to instill healthy behaviors, attitudes, and habits into each student to help them become the best they can be now and in the future. I encourage any parents or students to contact me with any questions, concerns, or if you would like additional information. I am available every day after school until 4 p.m. I can also arrange private meetings or conference calls to meet individual schedules and needs. You may contact me at the school telephone number: 1-313-467-8777 extension 14 or E-mail: mrozl@mail.gvsu.edu

Remember: Kids should have 60 minutes of exercise a day. Try playing a family game at the park or in your yard!

Have dinner as a family and discuss your childs day at school! It pulls the family together and brings the learning experience home

During our time together in health our classroom will be structured to be respectful, safe, and engaging so students feel comfortable and can learn. To establish this environment students are expected to follow the class rules and expectations which include: Being in class everyday - attendance is key. Being prepared a writing utensil, notebook, and completed homework. Show respect to their classmates and their teacher. Be honest to themselves, their peers and teacher. Follow all directions. Have enthusiasm and positive attitudes at all times.

My Pyramid is now My Plate!

The common Food Pyramid has been changed to a plate to help make it easier to see the correct portion sizes for each food group. The new My Plate depicts a plate divided into the different food groups to show the healthy amount of food to consume in each group. By accessing choosemyplate.gov you and your family can work together to build a healthy plate for every meal of the day. By engaging your child into building their own plate on the website, they become more aware of the healthy choices they should make each day. Try buying pre-divided plates to help make correct serving sizes easier to see. Here is an idea for a healthy day for your child: Breakfast: a plate of mixed fruit, 1 fried egg and a small serving of oats Lunch: a plate of salad, a few rolled up slices of lunch meat, and a roll Dinner: , plate of cabbage & orange salad, plate of roasted chicken, and whole wheat pita bread Breakfast is important to fuel your childs body and mind! Try: whole grain toast with peanut butter, oatmeal, waffles, yogurt, or fruit!

If you have any questions about these standards feel free to contact me.

There are eight health standards that will be taught in alignment with the seven State Strands for Health. These standards will build expectations necessary for learning each state strand. The following are a list of the state standards: 1. 2. 3. 4. 5. 6. 7. 8. Core Concepts Access Information Health Behaviors Influences Goal Setting Decision Making Social Skills Advocacy

5th graders should be getting 10-11 hours of sleep a night to be healthy and ready to learn each day!
