Sports News
Scientists believe that stem cells can help sport injuries. Since most sports injuries lead to problems like spine injury and loss of bone marrow stem cells can help with that. The stem cells can become bone marrow when they are placed in the correct environment. With more stem cell research players that were not able to be after an injury can play again. This will allow players to not worry so much about the injuries. Scientists believe that they can create a gene therapy that becomes the vanguard of sports injury repair. Most people are skeptical put it can still work out. With the new treatment the teams can learn what causes the disease. Since more and more people get these kinds of diseases the treatment will show the teams what kind of protection the players need.

The History about Stem Cells

In the early 1900's the first real stem cells were discovered when it was found that some cells generate blood cells. The history of stem cell research includes work with both animal and human stem cells. Pluripotent stem cells exist in the undifferentiated inner cell mass of the blastocyst and can form any of the over 200 different cell types found in the body. Stem cells are believed to help with many forms of disease such as diabetes and leukemia. Most of the testing done on mice since they have the best reaction to disease like humans do. So far most of the stem cell research does seem to be successful. There is a problem with the funding though since stem cell research doesnt get much support from the public because how controversial it is. In California the people had an election if they should fund the research. The results to the election were 60% percent saying yes and 40% saying no. It authorizes issuance of general obligation bonds to finance institute activities up to $3 billion dollars subject to an annual limit of $350 million. But even with all that funding they still need more.

People That Were Saved Today

Today a 11 year old girl named Jenny Martz was saved by from dying today from an Autoimmune disease today by using stem cells. Her fingers turned blue. Then she started gasping for breath and her joints stiffened so that she could not open her hands. They treated it by using stem cells from her blood. Doctors here and in Europe are aiming to reset the immune systems of patients with severe scleroderma. If they are successful, it will cast new light on numerous autoimmune diseases. Now even the worst patients can be saved. Thanks to the treatment people dont have to worry as much now. Now Jenny is with her family and is doing well and is feeling a lot better. This new treatment is giving more hope to people all over the world.

Leukemia: Leukemic Stem Cells Reversed to Pre-Leukemic Stage by Suppressing a Protein

Researchers at Queen University in Paris have discovered that leukemic stem cells can be reversed to a pre-leukemic stage by suppressing a protein called betacatenin found in the blood. Professor Lucy San, who led the study at the Department of Hematology at Queen University, says the findings, represent a 'critical step forward' in the search for more effective treatments for aggressive forms of leukemia. With the treatment they found that can save about 50% of all the leukemic cells in all people. The other 50% can still be helped. So far about 70% percent of all the people being tested on still show a lot of progress with the disease. They first tested on lab mice but they had more than 70% were saved. The earlier the treatment is issued the better. Most of the patients have made much improvement and if the treatment gets better they might even be cured one day. The research shows that it is better than chemo therapy. This just shows the good stem cell research.

Last Wednesday the LA times published Scientists hope that stem cells will be able to cure diseases. Clearly they havent seen any of the progress scientists are making. Stem cells have been helping with diseases for years and they hope it will work. So far this article is a bit far behind with the time. After the years stem cells have proven to show what they can do and them really good at it. The article also stated that Bush should have given stem cell research more funding. Stem cell research is still underway it only started a few years ago. If stem cell research wants to get more funding they should get more petitions and rallies to show how good stem cells really are. Even with the limited funding stem cell research could still make some good progress.

Should stem cell research continue? Of course it should it has saved many lives in the past and it is still doing so now. Stem cells can help find cures for diseases. Stem cells could even help scientists find out how we get diseases. So far stem cells have done well for the world. Maybe in the years to come stem cells might even help us cure diseases like diabetes .With only a small amount of funding have already helped find treatments that can deal with the diseases. Why shouldnt stem cell research continue it has not done that it hasnt promised. So far stem cell research only uses embryonic cells that are already not in use. Most of the embryonic cells are donated anyway.

Advice Column Q: My cousin has diabetes and he thinks that stem cells will cure him is that true?

A: No, but they will treat him better than other treatments. Q: Some people think that stem cell research is morally wrong what is your response? A: I dont think that stem cell research is that bad since it helps people now, and the embryos had the
POTENTIAL to become life that doesnt mean it will.

Readers Response
Stem cell research shouldnt continue. It is morally wrong. It creates life just to destroy it. Yes stem cells do find treatment but they dont fully cure the disease. All stem cell research is give false hope that there will be cure, but we dont need these cells to find cures. There are other ways to find cures. Life begins at conception so why stop it in the middle of the process. If these cells have the potential to become life why stop it. In the humanity right laws it says that everyone has the right to live, so far we are denying these rights to these cells.

Q: Why should we support stem cell research? A: Stem cells can become any form of cell in the body so it would save thousands of people from dying from
diseases such as leukemia. Come Down to The Stem Cell Labs to Get A Job To Be An Assistant GIVE US NEW DONATIONS TO CONTINUE RESEARCH!!!
