Samantha Simone Lesson Plan for a Flipped Lesson Type of setting: 2nd grade classroom Number of students: 18 Number of students with special needs: 2 Grade Level: 2 Subject: Science Topic: Plant Growth I. Purpose The purpose of this lesson is for students to observe how plants grow by: planting their own plant, feeding it, watering it, making sure it gets enough sunlight, and will also be able to describe the soil, plant, and other aspects involved in the environment for the plant to grow. The students will then note the changes in the plant over time and make a booklet to show the class on how plants grow. The instruction will be provided online for the students to refer to while making their booklets. II. Student Objectives -SWBAT go out into nature and observe interesting plants and describe them using their 5 senses -SWBAT watch a lesson about plants and complete a graphic organizer to remember important facts about plant growth - SWBAT follow along with a demonstration in class in order to correctly plant their own plant in class, this can be seen if the plant starts to bud after a few days -SWBAT take notes during the instruction to note what plants need to survive and make decisions on a daily basis as to what their plant needs -SWBAT observe changes in the plant by drawing pictures, writing down sentences, and orally describing what they did to keep the plant alive, -SWBAT feel and see the different elements in the environment and describe them both orally and written -SWBAT create a how to booklet for keeping plants alive based on the lesson and watching the plant grow successfully, if their plant fails they must write the booklet from the stand point of what they could have done different to keep the plant alive III. Common Core Standards The Common Core Standards that this lesson focuses on is The Earth Science System 5.4 C and E, which is C the Properties of Earth Materials, and E Energy in the Earth Systems. IV. Procedure 1. To begin the lesson I will take the students on a walk outside of the school in the playground and allow them to observe nature, feel it, touch it, smell it, and write down in detail three things they found interesting.

2. Then we will go back in the classroom and let the children discuss in one big group with me about the most interesting thing that they found. 3. After each student shares, I will tell the class that I have sent a lesson to them for them to do at home for tomorrow which includes environment that plants live in, components, what plants need to survive, sunlight in plants, and other elements needed. 4. The students will watch the lesson online at home and complete a graphic organizer I give them. 5. At the end of the lecture online I will tell the students that they will be demonstrating their understanding by planting a flower of their own! 6. When the students come in the next day I will have seeds, soil, and planters for each student and will lead a demonstration about how to plant a plant, and make one with the students attending to each one as necessary. 7. Once the plants are planted the students will meet in small groups with me walking around to discuss what they think are the most important things plants need to survive. 8. We will then come back as a full class and make a list of 5 most important things, and create a class list on how to raise a plant 9. The students will then be responsible for tending to their own plant for a few weeks until a flower grows, doing all of the raising on their own. They will draw pictures of the plants growth and write down what they did each day to make sure it stayed healthy, and if not healthy what is going wrong and ideas to fix it 10. At the end of the cycle we will observe the plants that have survived and describe them using the 5 senses. 11. The students and I will then take the plants outside and make a garden, with the principals permission of course! 12. After the plants are fully grown the students will compile a booklet on how to raise a plant describing the plants environment, what is important to the plant to survive, steps and tips. If the plant did not survive then they will write the booklet from the point of view of what they could have done different. 13. The booklets will then be put on display around the classroom and we will do a walk around to each one so the students can describe to their peers what they found out. 14. After all the books have been discussed then we will create a classroom book and keep it for reference. V. Materials -planters -seeds -soil -window -water -watering cans -graphic organizer -blank booklets - large class book -pens, pencils, markers, stickers, etc. VI. Assessment

The ways the students will be assessed in this lesson is through oral retelling of things they find interesting, oral and written explanation of the environment for plants, written 5 important things important to plants, physical display of planting a plant properly, written journal of the plants growth, verbal and written explanation of successes and failures. VII. Accommodations For my students with special needs I would allow them to use my help in planting the plant and I would allow each student with a special need to have a buddy in the class that they can talk to if they are stuck. If the two can not come up with a solution then they can ask me for help in how to make the plant grow healthy. I would also prefer pictures rather than written words if that is easier for the student, with a picture as the focal point and a few words to show what they did.
