After the 2011 Revolution in Egypt, Mohamed Morsi was elected president of Egypt.

However, he has become more autocratic over time. In November 2012, he issued a declaration which gave him a lot of undemocratic powers. The Muslim Brotherhood supports Morsi, and a lot of people in Egypt are scared that the Brotherhood is trying to make Egypt more Islamic. One example of this was the recent arrest of the popular comedian Bassem Yousef for insulting the President and Islam. As a result, there are a lot of protests, particularly in Tahrir Square. Tahrir Square is often completely blocked, and the protestors do not allow traffic to use the Square. The Islamic regime is supported by other Islamic states, in particular Qatar. There are also conflicts between religions. Groups of Christians and Muslims often fight. Some Salafi Muslims and extreme Copts are the main cause of this fighting. The police are either unable or unwilling to control these fights, and there are lots of examples of police brutality. The frequency of cases of sexual harassment and rape is also increasing. Sometimes these rapes are politically motivated, because their targets are opponents of the government, but there is also a wider issue as well. Some people say that the women are raped because they are wearing provocative clothes, but actually most of the women who are harassed wear a hijab or even a niqab. There are also very general problems in Egypt such as economic weakness, overcrowding in the cities and poverty. Because of the recent problems, tourism to Egypt has fallen dramatically. A report on international travel industry from the World Economic Forum ranked Egypt as the least safe country out of 140 tourist destinations. Egypt is running out of foreign currency quickly. If it keeps losing foreign currency, then prices in Egypt will increase. This will make food, fuel and services more expensive. The people will not be able to afford the prices and there will be a lot of anger. Right now, Egypt is still a place where people can live in safety, but this might change in the future. Some say that economic and social conditions will get worse and then the country will return to the chaos of the revolution. Others are more optimistic, but it is clear that the next two years are going to be very important for Egypt.
