Materials: You are expected to come to class every day with the following: Lined, loose-leaf paper Spiral or Composition notebook Blue or Black ink pen 1 EXPO Dry-Erase Marker 3X5 inch flashcards 3-ring binder, separated into 4 categories: Vocabulary+Notes, Homework/Essays, Handouts, Quizzes+Tests. Separate Portfolio Binder to put all completed assignments, organized chronologically. Grade Calculation Grades are recorded on a points-earned basis. For example, most homework assignments can be out of 10 points. The grading breakdown is as follows: Homework/Projects: 30% Class Participation, In-class Work: 15% Semester Portfolio: 15% Quizzes and Tests: 25% Semester Final Exam: 15% Class Participation It is absolutely imperative that each student participates in my class, including: Coming to class on time, every time. Oral presentations. Group, class, and partner discussions. A student cannot earn participation points in French class if she has an unexcused absence more than 3 times in each semester. Assignments/Projects Homework will be assigned and checked daily for completion then reviewed together as a class. Students will also have projects and essays throughout the semester to assess their overall understanding of the curriculum. These essays and projects must be edited before they are submitted with the final portfolio. Quizzes/Tests Quizzes and Tests will be taken in class throughout the semester to assess student understanding of the material. Students will complete group, open quizzes and smaller, open-note

quizzes. One quiz will be given halfway through each unit, and a test will be given at the end of each unit. French Portfolio Students will create a portfolio that shows all of their work throughout the course of the semester. The portfolio will remain in Ms. Meersons classroom and students will update it consistently throughout the school year. It will then be submitted at the end of each semester and graded to show the students progress throughout the semester. All of the writing assignments and projects, etc. must be edited/rewritten and submitted in the final portfolio. Students must bring in a binder and write their name and French level on the side of the binder. Recommendations for Academic Achievement French is a language that requires practice, but through practice, students will perfect their grammar, vocabulary, and general communication ability. This is why it is necessary to do the following in order to succeed in my class: Complete and submit all homework assignments on time. Review class lectures and notes daily. Come talk to me if you have issues, concerns, etc. I am always willing to help and its better to come to me EARLY instead of waiting until you feel overwhelmed. Each student will write a letter to herself dated on May 25th of the academic year explaining, in detail, how she achieved the grade that she wanted in French. Keep this letter on the outside of your binder to remind yourself of how you will succeed. Make-up Assignments & Tests: If the student had an excused absence on the day that homework was assigned, she may submit the homework from that day two days after the day that she was absent. Make up tests can only be taken if the student had an excused absence for the day of the test, or on a case-by-case basis. The make up tests/quizzes must be scheduled ahead of time and can only be taken after school. Do not speak to me about making up a test or assignment in class. You must come to office hours or tutoring to discuss. Teacher Availability for Students: By appointment during lunch and after school. Consequences for students actions: Students who exemplify positive behavior by supporting their peers will receive points that will benefit their homeroom group. More importantly, the positive consequence for following and encouraging classroom expectations is a welcoming and comfortable classroom community. If a student disrespects another student through verbal, physical, or electronic abuse in my class, they will be subject to the schools harshest punishments. Failure to respect oneself, ones peers and the teacher will lead to a teacher-student conference and a parent-teacher conference. Students behavior will be observed on a daily basis to keep accurate record for parent communication, etc. Three red checks will lead to a parent phone call. Further measures will be taken if necessary, including forcible un-enrollment from the course, detention, etc.
