SUBJECT: REPORT READABILITY DATE: CC: 7/1/2013

Andre Williams the purpose of this memo is to discuss the readability of your report with on the topic of water quality testing. The use of word spell/grammar checker is not wise for the following reasons. The checker does a poor job on sentence structure. In the following paragraph I will give you of examples of your sentence mistakes and ways you could fix them. Followed by that I will re-write your paragraph into a proper structure so next time you will have an idea of what I expect from you. Your sentence In this study, Jim Williams, the principle investigator, accumulated and accounted the data to Walt Sharpiro, and he analyzed the data is extremely fragmented. A better way to write the sentence would be; First Jim Williams, principle investigator accumulated and accounted for the data. After he was complete the data was transferred to Walt Shapiro who analyzed the data. Also the final sentence could use some work, In addition to these analytical tests, a scientist measured on-site field parameters for dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity total dissolved solids, PH, and discharge, when possible, during each sample incident. A proper way to structure the following statement would be as follows, In addition to the analytical tests a scientist measure the following on-site field parameters: dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity, total dissolved solids, PH level, and when possible discharge during each sampling incident. On the following page you will find your revised paragraph. If you have any questions concerning the way I structured it please contact me.

Water quality testing is increasing in popularity this year; however less DEQ staff currently qualified to conduct water quality sampling is below the required amount to complete all required tests by this years deadline. This studies principle investigator Jim Williams accumulated and accounted for all data. He then passed it to Walt Shapiro who analyzed the data. The schedule for the water quality-sampling took included the entire year to allow for base flow and high flow data for each stream. It is normally assumed that during the high flow season the banks of a stream are inaccessible due to safety concerns, but in one case the waterway was not too high to safely access accept for a few months during the study time. The sampling schedule started in early May 2004 and ended late April 2005. Some streams are covered by state and federal cost sharing programs so they will continue to be monitored for an additional year. Collection samples were taken by a scientist bi-weekly April through September, then once a month October through March. A scientist would analyze samples for total suspended solids, total volatile solids, nitrate + nitrate, ammonia, total nitrogen, total phosphorus, fecal coli and E. coli, all to cover the major water quality measures. In addition to the analytical tests, a scientist measured the following on-site field parameters: dissolved oxygen, temperature, conductivity, total dissolved solids, PH level, and when possible discharge during each sampling incident.
