Lab one: Making observations

Purpose: To practice qualitative observations.

Materials:
- Petri dish
- Glass string rod
- Water bottle
- Water
- Unknown A (led(II)nitrate)
- Unknown B (Potassium iodine)

Procedure: We went to the lab area, made sure that we complied by all the safety rules
(cleaning area, cleaning Petri dish, wearing safety-goggles, etc…). We put the unknown
substances on each side of the dish, and observed. After making observations on the dry
unknown substances, we poured on 10 drops of water, and observed.

Method:
1. Record observations for each unknown.
2. Mix the unknown together using the glass rod until a change is observed. Record your
observations.
3. Add 5-10 drops of water and mix. Record your observations.
4. Dispose of substances as directed.
5. Clean up.

Observations:
Substance: Observations:

Unknown A Small white cristals/powder, solid.

Unknown B Cristals (bigger than substance unknown A),

sticks to the bottom of Petri dish, solid.
Mixture White cristals turning slightly yellow, we
suspect that there was a bit water left in the
Petri dish, making this dry mixture turning
yellow.
Mixture w/ water The cristals dissolves, turning bright yellow
and getting paler the more we mix it. Turns
into a pasture-texture.
Remains a solid, by turning into paste.

Conclusion: This was a chemical change. We know this because the colour changes the
unknown substances react with each other.
Later on we got to know that unknown A was lead(II)nitrate and unknown B potassium
iodine.
