LAMELLAR ARMOR OF AN EASTERN SLAVONIC
WARRIOR IN THE BEGINNING OF XII CENTURY
(on the material of excavations in Gomel)
Summary There is no reconstruction of
heavy protective armament of an eastern Slavonic warrior
of the XIIXIII centuries, which was surely based on
archaeological, figurative or other sources in the national
literature. This circumstance impoverishes and minimizes
the conception of nature and development level of the military science on the Belarusian medieval land. The present
publication offers a practical experience on recreation the
lamellar warrior's armor of the first half of the XIII century, which was acquired on the basis of historical and
archaeological

sources and full-scale modeling for the first time. Unique

archaeological materials for ancient Russia and Eastern
Europe as a whole are assumed as a basis of the reconstruction, they were discovered during the archaeological
dig of A.A. Makyshnikay of arms workshop on the roundabout town of an annalistic Gomel (the investigations of
the 1987). The workshop specialized in the creation and
repair of protective (coat of mail, chain armor, plate and
tire bracers and boots) and battle (swords anc' sabers) armament. The fragments of a legend on a wooden vessel
are evidence of the existence of an armourer Fedor who
used to work there. About 1500 plates intended fro assembling several models of coats of mail of lamellar and scaly
construction were found in the workshop. We have selected three types (A,B,C) our of all range of definable
exemplars, which are serial and may serve as a reliable
archaeological source for the recreation of several kinds of
lamellar coats of mail.
Figurative materials of the Middle Ages not only of
the Old Russian but also of the Central Europe, North
Europe and eastern origin are involved in the process of
reconstruction. The attention is drawn to necessity of prior
criticism of eastern Slavonic figurative material of the XIXII centuries, in which saint warriors are often represented
in gala Greek-Roman armor that had become a thing of the
By means of experimental full-scale modeling, several
"functioning" lamellar coats of mail were recreated, they
we z tested in terms of knights duel (the master and investigator Ju.M.Lupinenko). The replica of the armor
stood the test on flexibility, mobility as well as on protecting
the warrior's body from injuries of massive, obtuse,
chapping and thrust weapon. In the process of modeling
averaged weight and quantitative characteristics of several
patterns of lamellar armor were received.
