Suicide is the third-leading cause of death for young people between the ages of 15 and 24 years.
During a 12 month preceding survey in 2011
24.1% of teens had thought seriously about attempting suicide 17.7% of teens had made a specific plan to attempt suicide 8.7% of teens had attempted suicide

-Female teens (30.4%) , were more likely than male teens (18.3%) to have thought seriously about suicide. - Female teens (11.9%) were more likely than male teens (5.6%) to have attempted suicide.

Over one million people commit suicide every year, making it the tenth-leading cause of death worldwide. It is a leading cause of death among teenagers and adults under 35. There are an estimated 10 to 20 million nonfatal attempted suicides every year worldwide

Suicide is the fourth leading cause of death for children between the ages of 10 and 14.

Causes
-major disappointment, rejection, failure, or loss such as breaking up with a girlfriend or boyfriend, failing a big exam, or witnessing family turmoil or conflicts.
-Research has also explored the specific brain chemistry of those who take their own lives. Recent studies indicate that those who have attempted suicide may also have low levels of the brain chemical serotonin. Serotonin helps control impulsivity, and low levels of the brain chemical are thought to cause more impulsive behavior.

On a scale of 1 to 10 of how stressed teens feel, the average = 6.5.
