Yesterday we talked about rhymes and how we can find them in lots of books and how many words have rhyming pairs. Today we are first going to read a book that has lots of Rhymes in it then we are going to do a fun activity that has to do with rhyming words. Connections to previous learning and future content: This is connected to their unit on rhyming words. The day prior the class was introduced to what rhyming words are and did a discussion on them. Reading the book will help them get more concrete idea on what rhyming words are.

Teacher Modeling Wasnt that a fun book? I really enjoyed reading it with you guys! Now we are going to do a fun lesson with rhyming pictures. First I will pass out the picture sets to the students so they can look at them and I will demonstrate with my pictures in the front of the room. See all these fun pictures? Well each of the pictures has a match that it rhymes with. It is your job to find its pair! Okay so first I am going show you! I will pick any picture I got a picture of the word hat. Now I have to find what rhymes, hmm. Log, Does log rhyme? No thats not it here is a picture of a cat. Hear how they rhyme? Cat and Hat. For students who may be struggling I can give them a list of words that is not as challenging for them to work on. For the advanced student I can have a list of harder words or instead of pictures have the advanced students work with words. Check for Understanding: Can the student understand what you are asking him/her to do? When I asked the students, does log rhyme with hat, it was a way to check to see if they understood rhyming words. I will then do another example but this time with a student to see if the children understand. Guided Practice Okay now lets try one together! I will pick a student to pick a word. Who wants to pick a word? Okay you picked map, can we find a word that rhymes with map? Cap? Very good job class!I will do one or tow more of these examples depending on the classes understanding of the concept. If they are getting them right I will move on to independent practice and let the students do the activity all on their own. Independent Practice You all did a great job now I want to see you do it on your own! Work individually at your desks and try to find the rest of the pairs! If you need help raise your hand and I will come answer your question. For my ELL student I will also give her the list of words in Spanish so that she can comprehend the word she is trying to look for. If a student is having trouble I will be coing around the class to check and give any extra assistance during it. Class Discussion and/or group activity: Can be part of independent practice or provides follow up to independent practice Wasnt that a fun activity? You all did a great job! I thought it would be fun if we each took out a piece of paper and write down some more rhyming word pairs! Once the students are done I will ask for volunteers to give some word pairs that they found and I will write their examples on the board. This will continue until everyone that wants to share has had a chance. Closure of Lesson If the students were able to properly develop a substantial list of pairs of words that match I will then know that they were able to understand matching words and also rhyming words. Also

through their discussion and questions I will be able to tell if the student was able to understand the lesson and where they could use more help.
