LA UNION

(Featuring songs from Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao)

This dance-chorale presentation showcases the singing and dancing talents of the Don Eulogio de Guzman Memorial National High School Special Program in the Arts (Vocal Arts - Coro Eulogiano) in collaboration with the dance arts group. The presentation depicts about the exploration of the beauty of the Philippines thru music and dance featuring the different folksongs and ethnic songs of Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. The journey starts with the Bomala Ka Ay Bowan, a Cordillera Folksong sung at night by travellers in the hours they spend walking to their destination. The song asks the moon to come out to light their path. The first destination is Mindanao and a Maguindanao ethnic song Ilay Gandangan is presented. Originally, Ilay gandangan, Beautiful Sun in translation is a chant which calls the sun to come out during rainy days. Following the song Ilay Gandangan is a Visayan Fishing song called Pasigin is sung. The song tells the story of a fisherman on his way home carrying fishes from the river. Finally, the journey ends in La Union. Ilocanos are known with their sumptuous cuisine like pakbet. The song Pong Pong Guinapong depicts about a farmer who cooks pakbet and bring this in going to the field. The presentation ends with the song La Union: Born with Love.

Constantino, Jr. Literature: Has been transmitted orally by the Kankana-ey from generation to generation, becoming one of the popular folksong of Cordillera particularly in Mountain Province. Sung at night by travellers in the hours they spend walking to their destination in Sadsadan, the song asks the moon to come out to light the path.
