eTEMPLATE FOR CMaP PROJECT Each participant who participated in the CMaP workshop signed an agreement to conduct a CMaP

project and write up. This template is provided to you as a guide for the CMaP project you agreed to conduct with your students. Please complete a detailed write-up of your CMaP project using this template. Use the kind of language and detail so other teachers can take your project to conduct in their classrooms. An archive of CMaP projects will be made available for Utah educators. Send to: Jared Covili, Utah Education Network, 1705 E. Campus Center Dr, MBH 205, Salt Lake City, Utah 84112. jared@uen.org. Project Title: Green Alta Created by: Elaine Hardman Class: Environmental Club, Biology & AP Biology Classes Project Description Students will survey Alta students, their families and others living within the Alta High Boundaries to see whether or not they would support measures to reduce car transportation to school, and support students walking or riding bikes to school Students will map the area within Alta boundaries mapping traffic flow patterns, lighting on streets and sidewalks, regulatory signs, traffic lights, and cross walk locations. They will map streets that already have bike lanes and where bike lanes might possibly be added. They will map the school, identifying possible locations around the school where bicycles can be locked up and kept secure. Maps will be posted to a webpage linked to the school website, with patrons able to comment on proposals.

Community Issue or Problem Selected -How project evolved?

My Environmental Science classes have been studying green cities and green architecture. With the changes coming to the school population, half of our students will be new to Alta next year (9th and 10th grade) also we will be having fewer

student attending Alta due to the opening of Corner Canyon High School. It is a good time to implement changes to engage the Alta community and to get students interested in solving environment problems, starting with their own school community. This will be a way of establishing a new and better Alta High School and community climate. Utah Core Standards/Objectives

Analyze how changes in an environment can result from changes in human activity

Essential Question(s) -Spatial Issue

How can increasing walking and cycling to school improve student health, lower energy costs, and increase students awareness of environmental issues.

Assessments (rubrics, scoring guides)

This project will be done with the Environmental science club, or a service club in the school as I am not teaching Environmental Science this year at Alta and it would be impossible to do as part of the Biology Curriculum, due to necessity of teaching core content. Map of Alta Boundary neighborhoods with locations of attributes (regulatory signs, crosswalks, lights, traffic lights, etc.) Map of Alta High School parking lots and walkway including proposed areas for secure bike parking. Results of community survey and whether or not support is there for proposed changes.
