A research report is a formal statement of the research

process and its results It narrates the problem studied,methods used for studying it and the findings and conclusions of the study. Means for communicating our research experiences to others. The purpose of a research report is to communicate to interested persons, the methodology and results of the study to make them understand the process. The main aim is to tell the reader what was done, why its done.

CHARACTERSTICS AND FUNCTIONS OF REPORT

A research report is narrative but authoritative document on the outcome of research effort. It presents highly specific information for a designated audience. It is simple, readable and accurate form of communication. FUNCTIONS It serves as a basic reference material for future use in developing research proposals in the related area

completed research project It is a means for evaluating the researchers ability and competence to do research It provides the systematic knowledge on the problems and issues analysed.

TYPES OF REPORT
There are 6 types of reports

Technical report: It is a comprehensive full report of the research process. It is primarily meant for academic community ex scientists and other researchers. Popular report : This type of report is for an audience of executives or administrators and non technical users. The reader is less concerned with methodological details ,interested in finding conclusions.

Interim report: This is a short report which may contain either the first results of the analysis or the final outcome of the analysis of some aspects completely analysed Summary report: It is generally prepared for consumption of lay audience ie general public The report is written in non technical, simple language with a use of pictorial charts Research abstract: This is a short summary of technical report. It is prepared by doctoral students when submitting their thesis. Research article: This is designed for publication in a professional journal.
